Higgins’ O’Mara Place is typically a peaceful cul-de-sac of just six homes.

However, on Saturday morning it was buzzing with activity as more than 100 people gathered in the front yard of a corner block for a competitive auction.

Number 2 O’Mara Place attracted 11 registered parties, with seven active bidders vying for the property.

LJ Hooker Gungahlin agent Jason Hall said the vendors – one an architect, the other a horticulturalist – had spent years improving the three-bedroom home.

With free-flowing living spaces, timber floors and a lovely, low-maintenance garden, it drew strong numbers to open homes.

Auctioneer Stephen Bunday accepted an opening bid of $450,000. A rapid succession of bids pushed the price above $600,000.

The gavel fell on $604,000 with a young couple securing the property.

Mr Hall said it was a standout price for one of Belconnen’s more affordable suburb and the work that the vendors put into the home had paid off.

“The renovations had been done really well,” Mr Hall says.

“The result was based on what the owners had done, it was not your typical sales price for that suburb.”

It was another case of frenetic bidding in Turner with the sale of a three-bedroom townhouse at 3/19 Towns Crescent.

Belle Property Kingston agent Dan McAlpine said large townhouses were highly sought after in the inner north suburb, which is dominated by apartments.

Mr McAlpine said the home attracted a mix of downsizers, professional couples and families.

He said a growing number of families were opting for a centrally located townhouse over a freestanding home.

“They want that access and a bit of that cosmopolitan lifestyle,” Mr McAlpine said.

There were 14 registered parties and five placed a bid. Mr McAlpine said the result of $820,000 exceeded expectations and was driven by strong competition and a shortage of stock.

He said a similar-sized townhouse sold in the complex for $688,000 just six months ago.

It was another quiet weekend for auctions with just eight properties going under the hammer on Saturday. Six sold, contributing to a solid 75 per cent clearance rate.

February brings a return to usual auction numbers. Allhomes has 40 properties listed for auction next Saturday.
