One of the Iraqi refugees who was detained for 17 hours when he tried to enter the United States after Trump signed an executive order has now been released from New York's JFK airport. Hameed Khalid Darweesh, pictured, walked free from detention on Saturday afternoon after he flew into the airport the night before, just hours after Trump signed off on his tough new immigration bans. The 53-year-old had worked for the U.S. government in Iraq for 10 years as a translator, engineer and contractor and had a valid special immigration visa to relocate to America.
He was travelling with his wife and three children at the time but they were not detained. They were heading to Charlotte, North Carolina to start their new life in America.

Investigators used a controversial DNA testing method to solve the cold case rape and murder of Righteous Brothers singer Bill Medley's ex-wife Karen Klass. The 32-year-old was sexually assaulted and strangled with her pantyhose on January 30, 1976 as she returned to her home in Hermosa Beach, California. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department revealed on Friday that the case 'was solved through the use of familial DNA, which identified the killer'. They would not confirm who the suspect was or if he had been taken into custody. Medley is one half of the famed Righteous Brothers signing duo with Bobby Hatfield.

Sir John Hurt (right), the two-time Oscar nominated star of the Elephant Man (top left), has died at the age of 77. The English actor was born in Derbyshire and became a critical and commercial success in films like Midnight Express, Alien (bottom left) and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Hurt bounced back from pancreatic cancer in October 2015 and signed on to appear in a West End production of The Entertainer, only to pull out on the advice of his doctors after he was taken to the hospital with an intestinal complaint. His widow, Anwen Hurt (inset, pictured together), today said it will be 'a strange world' with out the actor, whose death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the showbusiness industry, with director Mel Brooks and J K Rowling among those paying tribute.

John Hurt and French model Marie-Lise Volpeliere-Pierrot had been together for 16 years when her horse bolted and she fell as they were out riding together in Oxford, dying later that day. Speaking of the days that followed, he later said: 'Drink doesn't make you feel better. It just exacerbates the mood you are in.' His wild drinking earned him a reputation as a party animal, but he described it as 'a distressed person looking for something he couldn't find'.

Prosecutors on Thursday showed jurors in a Vista, California, courtroom a videotape of Cynthia Cdebaca, 65, raising her arms and celebrating (left) the shooting death of Geoward Eustaquio. Cdebaca (bottom right) shot Eustaquio (top right) dead on the morning of February 11, 2014 in his home in Fallbrook, California, a suburb north of San Diego. Cdebaca told police that she planned the shooting for two weeks. She said she was angered when Eustaquio told her that she wasn't invited to attend her granddaughter's spelling bee that day. Cdebaca described how she shot her son-in-law 10 times, even stopping to reload before shooting him after initially wounding him.

An emotional Serena Williams has paid tribute to her older sister Venus after demolishing her in straight sets to win a record seventh Australian Open Final. Serena thanked Venus for 'inspiring her' and said that none of it could have been possible without her. The pair shared in an emotional embrace after Serena took the match in straight sets 6-4, 6,4 to also land an open-era record 23rd grand slam singles crown.

President Donald Trump's first conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin since taking office is underway. The conversation has caused concerns that Trump will lift sanctions imposed on the Russian government by the US. Russia's security chief, Nikolai Patrushev said he has high hopes for the telephone call and added 'everything will be positive.'

Robin Thicke pulled out of his NHL100 Gala tribute for his late father Alan Thicke on Friday. This comes after his custody battle with his former wife Paula Patton has taken an ugly turn with claims of abuse. The Blurred Lines' hitmaker was nowhere to be seen during the tribute held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Instead, family friend and hockey star Wayne Grezky replaced Robin to honor the late Growing Pains actor. Alan died last month after suffering a heart attack while playing hockey with his 19-year-old son Carter. Paula Patton was pictured in a Malibu parking lot with her son Julian and a man who appeared to be a mediator on Friday. A witness said her ex Robin Thicke's girlfriend April Love Geary was also there in another vehicle and appeared to speak to the mediator who then spoke to Patton. Geary did not get out of her vehicle.

Emmett Till, pictured top right, a 14-year-old black boy from Chicago died an unspeakably horrible death at the hands of two white men while visiting racially segregated Mississippi in 1955. They beat, shot and disfigured his body beyond recognition - and walked free, acquitted at the hands of an all-white, all-male jury. NEW Zachary Shearon (left), 13, and Richard Hummer (right), 14, were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder in connection to planning a school shooting at The Villages Charter Middle School (inset) on Thursday. The two teenage boys allegedly plotted a 'Columbine-style' mass shooting were pictured smiling in their yearbook photos. Shearon, the supposed initiator of the plan, allegedly showed up to a Holocaust tribute wearing swastikas on his hands and Nazi logos on his arms. He had recently made a joke on social media about how the 'Columbine B-Ball team lost its two best shooters'.

This year's cover had been praised for featuring a number of black actresses, including Janelle Monae, Aja Naomi King, Lupita Nyong'o and Ruth Negga among Amy Adams and Emma Stone. The male student was kidnapped in broad daylight around 3.40pm on Thursday. He said the man had asked him for money and then, when he hesitated, grabbed him by the arm and pushed him into the car. The student said the man then drove him to multiple ATM machines and forced the student to try and make purchases with his credit card at high-end stores. He let the student go after two hours and fled when all transactions were denied. The student was not injured and said he did not see the man display a weapon.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have hired a team of gardeners to plant a 820ft wall of conifer trees along the western side of Kensington Palace to block the view of anyone hoping to glimpse of the royals. The move is thought to be costing the tax payer more than $25,000 but the Royal Family were not required to seek planning permission. It comes as Kensington Palace confirmed William and Kate will move back to London with Prince George, three, and 20-month old Princess Charlotte, in the summer after the Duke's contract as an air ambulance pilot in East Anglia ends.

Jenea Patterson (left), 18, died Wednesday of a drug overdose, her father, James Patterson of Kingston, Pennsylvania, said. This past June, Patterson inspired a group of Pennsylvania residents to try to drive into New York City with a cache of weapons in a botched 'rescue' attempt. Pennsylvania residents John Cramsey (right), Dean Smith and Kimberly Arendt are facing weapons charges after they were stopped in their truck (inset) at the entrance of the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City in June. Cramsey, who lost a daughter to drug addiction, said he believed Patterson was in danger after she texted an acquaintance from a New York drug den.

Indigenous Australians were kept alongside animals and paraded around the world in what was called The Human Zoo. In the late 19th and mid 20th centuries up to 20 Aboriginal people, along with tens of thousands of other entrapped humans, were put on display around Europe and North America. The Palm Island community in North Queensland has been reunited with the remains of an ancestor who was exhibited in The Human Zoo, according to the ABC.

The American import collapsed on the court in the final quarter after contesting a rebound with Taipans centre Nnanna Egwu resulted in his left eyeball coming out of its socket. Mitchell made light of the injury in a tweet which began with an image of two eyes '.. too soon? Lol thanks for all the love, well wishes, and prayers tonight. I'm home and seeing fine, more tests tomorrow'.

Storms battering Northern California have caused a bypass to overflow and become an 'inland sea.' The rare occurrence over the last two weeks, resulting from rain and snow runoff, has filled the Yolo Bypass's farms and wetlands with water. Drivers on Interstate 80 between Davis and and Sacramento, 15 miles apart, will appear to drive over a large lake.

A tiger caused mass panic on the streets of Sicily after escaping from a travelling circus early on Saturday morning. The predatory beast escaped its captors in Monreale, Palermo where it rested outside what appears to be a kitchen shop for a number of hours. Although some locals ran for cover others from the safety of their flats can be seen (on the left) posing for selfies from their balconies with the marauding beast in the background below. A special police force deployed to recapture the animal considered using tranquilsers to sooth the tiger but decided to use a cage instead before returning it to the circus. Monreale Mayor Piero Capizzi said at first he thought someone was joking when he was told a tiger was on the loose.

Rare images from North Korea shows thousands of workers, some of whom appear to be children, shoveling snow from a road leading to the hermit country's Masikryong ski resort. Scores of civilians were captured along the winding stretch during blizzard conditions hacking at the frozen ground with makeshift wooden shovels as oppose to using snow trucks, used in other parts of the world, to clear snow covered roads. Footage shows men, women and children as young as 11 or 12-years-of-age wrapped up in winter clothing moving the snow to allow the country's elite and tourists to get to the plush resort on the outskirts of Wonsan.

A cat was stuck on a car exhaust for 12 hours before it was freed by mechanics. Sharley Fry's pet Daisy became wedged in the underside of a Citroen outside a neighbour's home in the UK. Attempts to lure her out with food failed so Daisy had to endure a 200-metre drive to a garage where mechanics rescued her. Footage shows mechanic Terry, 31, dismantling the car exhaust to get her out.

Bars, a Maine Coon kitty, was filmed by his owner opening one drawer at his home in Moscow, Russia. He then uses that as a stand to open the second draw in the cabinet. The clever kitty is then seen grabbing a fluffy toy with his claws before it falls on the floor, out of his sight. Bars walks off, confused, before returning and realising where it has gone, and lays down and starts to play with it. His owner, Tanya Shpakus, said: 'He's very stubborn and always achieves his goals.'

A mysterious cloud which looked just like a UFO has baffled skiers who were stunned after seeing it in the sky. The bizarre sight could be seen over ski resorts in Sweden earlier this week and many stopped on the mountain to take photographs. Nature photographer Sara Björkebaum spotted the cloud and uploaded a picture of it to her Instagram page. Ms Björkebaum, from Sweden, wrote: 'Weird weather, cool clouds. I think I may jump on that spaceship.' Experts have said that it was a 'lenticular cloud', which typically form over mountain peaks.
