Sir John Hurt (left), the two-time Oscar nominated star of the Elephant Man (top right), has died at the age of 77. The English actor was born in Derbyshire and became a critical and commercial success in films like Midnight Express, Alien (bottom right) and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Hurt bounced back from pancreatic cancer in October 2015 and signed on to appear in a West End production of The Entertainer, only to pull out on the advice of his doctors after he was taken to the hospital with an intestinal complaint. His widow, Anwen Hurt, today said it will be 'a strange world' with out the actor, whose death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the showbusiness industry, with director Mel Brooks and J K Rowling among those paying tribute.

An emotional Serena Williams has paid tribute to her older sister Venus after demolishing her in straight sets to win a record seventh Australian Open Final. Serena thanked Venus for 'inspiring her' and said that none of it could have been possible without her. The pair shared in an emotional embrace after Serena took the match in straight sets 6-4, 6,4 to also land an open-era record 23rd grand slam singles crown.

The White House took hours to release details, leaving reporters to rely on a photograph taken Thursday aboard Air Force One that appeared to show one page. The final executive order announces a 120-day pause on the U.S. refugee acceptance program and a blanket ban on Syrian refugees until further notice. It also halts immigration and visas from Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. The order prioritizes asylum-seekers who apply on the basis of religious persecution - but only when their religion is a minority in their home countries.

President Donald Trump joked 'there goes that relationship' to Theresa May after he was quizzed on his support for torture and calls to ban Muslims by the BBC's political editor. Challenged about his controversial views on torture, Russia, stopping Muslims entering the US and punishment for torture by Laura Kuenssberg, Mr Trump joked to Mrs May: 'This was your choice of a question? There goes that relationship!' As Mr Trump looked round the press pack at the White House aghast at the hard-hitting question, Mrs May laughed awkwardly in response.

A brave firefighter who worked at Ground Zero following the 9/11 terrorist attack has become the 124th officer to die after breathing in toxic air. Brian J Masterson, 61, (left) originally from Lissavaddy, Co Longford, Ireland, was working with the New York City Fire Department on the day of the attack. He was quickly on the scene after the two planes crashed into the Twin Towers in Manhattan in 2001 (right). But the father-of-three died earlier this week after bravely battle against esophageal cancer. Mr Masterson's funeral was held yesterday in his new home of Walden in New York - 68 miles north of Manhattan. He was one of many first responders who have since been diagnosed with cancer as a direct result of working at the site.

Emmett Till, pictured top right, a 14-year-old black boy from Chicago died an unspeakably horrible death at the hands of two white men while visiting racially segregated Mississippi in 1955. They beat, shot and disfigured his body beyond recognition - and walked free, acquitted at the hands of an all-white, all-male jury. Video caught the horrifying moment passengers watched as a pick-up truck sped into their bus. Eight people were injured on the Centro bus but miraculously, no one was fatally hurt. Herbert Barry, 60, suffered a broken leg and hand injury according to Syracuse.com.

Paula Patton was pictured in a Malibu parking lot with her son Julian and a man who appeared to be a mediator on Friday. A witness said her ex Robin Thicke's girlfriend April Love Geary was also there in another vehicle and appeared to speak to the mediator who then spoke to Patton. Geary did not get out of her vehicle. Patton won temporary custody of her six-year-old son after allegations of abuse and cheating were revealed in court documents. Patton claims that Thicke has been a long-time drug abuser, cheated on her shamelessly and even beat her on occasion. She also claimed that Thicke hosted six naked women at their Los Angeles home for a manicure and pedicure party in April 2014. Thicke's lawyer, Angela Pierce di Donato, told People that the allegations were concocted because Patton herself had been violating the custody orders.

Jenea Patterson (left), 18, died Wednesday of a drug overdose, her father, James Patterson of Kingston, Pennsylvania, said. This past June, Patterson inspired a group of Pennsylvania residents to try to drive into New York City with a cache of weapons in a botched 'rescue' attempt. Pennsylvania residents John Cramsey (right), Dean Smith and Kimberly Arendt are facing weapons charges after they were stopped in their truck (inset) at the entrance of the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City in June. Cramsey, who lost a daughter to drug addiction, said he believed Patterson was in danger after she texted an acquaintance from a New York drug den.

Riley's parents will receive $50,000 plus $1,500 in Gerber clothing. Shines says the money will help start a college fund for her son.

Creepy footage showing 'a fleet of UFOs' hovering over the border between the USA and Mexico has mysteriously disappeared from the internet. The 14 minute-long film showed a group of seven or eight lights dancing above a border control post in Tijuana, Mexico. The sight was so unusual that border staff even abandoned their posts to watch the 'UFOs' light up the sky.

Storms battering Northern California have caused a bypass to overflow and become an 'inland sea.' The rare occurrence over the last two weeks, resulting from rain and snow runoff, has filled the Yolo Bypass's farms and wetlands with water. Drivers on Interstate 80 between Davis and and Sacramento, 15 miles apart, will appear to drive over a large lake.

NEW A cat was stuck on a car exhaust for 12 hours before it was freed by mechanics. Sharley Fry's pet Daisy became wedged in the underside of a Citroen outside a neighbour's home in the UK. Attempts to lure her out with food failed so Daisy had to endure a 200-metre drive to a garage where mechanics rescued her. Footage shows mechanic Terry, 31, dismantling the car exhaust to get her out.

American historian Douglas Smith has lifted the lid on the extraordinary stash of US Army Major Martin Manhoff who was expelled from the USSR for leaving sensitive documents on a train. The US diplomat has travelled around the country taking thousands of photographs during the Stalin era more than 60 years ago. They remained untouched in a closet in Washington state until Mr Smith asked if he could explore the home after the accused spy's wife passed away.

NEW Rare images from North Korea shows thousands of workers, some of whom appear to be children, shoveling snow from a road leading to the hermit country's Masikryong ski resort. Scores of civilians were captured along the winding stretch during blizzard conditions hacking at the frozen ground with makeshift wooden shovels as oppose to using snow trucks, used in other parts of the world, to clear snow covered roads. Footage shows men, women and children as young as 11 or 12-years-of-age wrapped up in winter clothing moving the snow to allow the country's elite and tourists to get to the plush resort on the outskirts of Wonsan.

Harriet, a 3-year-old Korean Jindo, was one of 200 dogs bound for slaughter before being saved from a dog meat farm in Wonju, South Korea last week. Harriet, along with 14 others, were taken in by the Humane Society of Tampa Bay in Florida. The poor dog was so used to sleeping standing up - presumably because she has been held captive in a cage with multiple other pooches - that when she got to Florida she didn't know how to lay down on her bed. She was filmed dozing off as she sat on a blanket before almost falling over as she drifted to sleep. Staff had to spend a day showing her how to lay down to sleep.

Bars, a Maine Coon kitty, was filmed by his owner opening one drawer at his home in Moscow, Russia. He then uses that as a stand to open the second draw in the cabinet. The clever kitty is then seen grabbing a fluffy toy with his claws before it falls on the floor, out of his sight. Bars walks off, confused, before returning and realising where it has gone, and lays down and starts to play with it. His owner, Tanya Shpakus, said: 'He's very stubborn and always achieves his goals.'

NEW A mysterious cloud which looked just like a UFO has baffled skiers who were stunned after seeing it in the sky. The bizarre sight could be seen over ski resorts in Sweden earlier this week and many stopped on the mountain to take photographs. Nature photographer Sara Björkebaum spotted the cloud and uploaded a picture of it to her Instagram page. Ms Björkebaum, from Sweden, wrote: 'Weird weather, cool clouds. I think I may jump on that spaceship.' Experts have said that it was a 'lenticular cloud', which typically form over mountain peaks.
