The painstaking, two-day excavation process to recover Ms Bailey's remains was outlined to jurors at St Albans Crown Court. In July 2016, three months after she vanished, the body of the 51-year-old was found in a cesspit deep below the couple's £1.5 million home with her dog, Boris.

Hayley Gascoigne, 32, suffered a cardiac arrest as she sat in the concourse while sitting next to her parents Terry and Kathleen at Hull Crown Court yesterday (right). Days earlier Hayley, who has been described as 'devoted' to her three sons and baby daughter, had posted on Facebook 'Happy2 day with my four' with pictures of her family playing on trampolines in their local park (inset). Yesterday afternoon Miss Gascoigne began convulsing and was rushed to hospital but could not be saved - her mother has had to break the devastating news to the children. Police have launched an investigation amid concerns from a relative that she may have 'taken something' in the toilet shortly before she became ill. Speaking at his home in Scunthorpe Mr Gascoigne (together left) said: 'My daughter died in my other daughter's arms. She died because of the stress'.

Comedian Rory McGrath, of Cambridge, bombarded his harassment victim with a string of texts and emails threatening to reveal details of their affair to her husband. Messages (right) reveals how the comedian, who was yesterday given a suspended sentence following a 14-month harassment campaign, goaded the woman with whom he had a five-year affair. In one message, he said: 'I will show your husband all the intimate photos and emails. This isn't a threat but a statement of fact. If you involve police your husband will find out anyway.' In another, McGrath (pictured outside court with his wife Nicola), warned: 'I have emails and am willing to show you, mesmerising and beautiful, but quite graphic photos.'

Jonathan Dent, 32, of Grimsby, Lincolnshire, swerved as he sped along the bridge towards Hull (left) before his car flew over the barriers and landed on the footpath (right). The vehicle only just avoided falling into the water below – and Dent, who suffered injuries including a broken arm, was cut from the mangled wreckage (centre). The accident left the bridge with £11,000 worth of damage and put members of the public 'at severe risk', Grimsby Crown Court heard. Dent has now admitted dangerous driving and was given a suspended sentence of three months in jail as well as being disqualified from driving for three years.

American historian Douglas Smith has lifted the lid on the extraordinary stash of US Army Major Martin Manhoff who was expelled from the USSR for leaving sensitive documents on a train. The US diplomat has travelled around the country taking thousands of photographs during the Stalin era more than 60 years ago. They remained untouched in a closet in Washington state until Mr Smith asked if he could explore the home after the accused spy's wife passed away.
