UPDATED One of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in recent history weakened a little on Saturday (NOAA satellite image, left, shows it moving slowly westward at about 7mph) as it roared across the Caribbean on a course that put Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba in the path of potentially devastating winds and rain. Matthew briefly reached the top hurricane classification, Category 5, and was the strongest Atlantic hurricane since Felix in 2007. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said its winds had slipped to a still-devastating 145mph and it was expected to reach the eastern part of Jamaica on Monday (its projected path shown bottom right). Jamaican authorities said they were taking all possible precautions (Kingstonians stocking up on water and food on Friday, top right).

Dozens of sightings have occurred in more than ten states in the past month, with police increasing patrols and parents fearful for their children's safety. De Kroon, a 34-year-old mother-of-one, was killed in the horrific train accident that left 112 people injured when it crashed at a 'high rate of speed' into the train terminal on Thursday morning.

Sonja Andersen, 42, and her 10-year-old daughter Ava, arrived Saturday in Whycocomagh after a nine-day road trip from West Vancouver. Sonja responded to an online job offer from the Farmer's Daughter Country Market, a craft and food store that promised a modest salary, two acres of land - and, for Sonja and Ava, a much needed change of scenery. Whycocomagh, which has around 850 residents, is located on Cape Breton island, at the easternmost end of Nova Scotia. Sonja and Ava (pictured bottom right during their road trip and left in front of the Farmer's Daughter Country Market) have been in the village for just a week. Ava is pictured upper right in front of a sign welcoming her to her new home in Nova Scotia.

Dashcam footage and audio that was recently released indicates that two Sacramento police officers may have tried to hit a homeless man with their police cruiser before fatally shooting him. The shocking video shows the police attempting to run over 50-year-old Joseph Mann on July 11. Audio from the video was enhanced by the Sacramento Bee and includes the voices of the two officers in the car. As the officers take pursuit of Mann, one can be heard saying: 'F*** this guy.' Officers Randy Lozoya and John Tennis, can also be heard saying 'I'm gonna hit him' and 'OK, go for it' before appearing to drive their cruiser toward Mann, based on the dashcam released by police. They attempted to hit Mann twice, but he was able to dodge the cruiser both times. The two officers then proceeded to pursue Mann on foot before shooting him dead at least 14 times.

Kristen O'Meara from Chicago had decided against immunizing her three daughters after going out of her way to research how it could harm them. The 40-year-old however changed her mind when her daughters Natasha, five, and twins Áine and Lena (left) contracted rotavirus which causes severe diarrhea and dehydration. She admitted her guilt this week, conceding: ''It was awful and it didn't have to happen because I could have had them vaccinated.' The girls have all been fully vaccinated since.

A look behind the scenes of the squalid world of the arms trade paints a gritty picture of the very unglamorous business of war. Photographer, Nikita Teryoshin, gained access into a tight-knit arms fair called the MSPO which was held in Kielce, a small town in Poland. Teryoshin joined businessmen, soldiers, politicians and civilians at the event where he captured startling images of an unseen world for his ongoing photo series, Nothing Personal. The MSPO is the biggest military trade fair in Eastern Europe that takes place annually. Some of his photos show tanks, drones, missiles (top left) machine guns (bottom right) along with several other heavy-duty weapons. Teryoshin also said that there were helicopters (top right) and boats with armament attachments (bottom left) such as missiles and machine guns.

Donald Trump has enlisted the help of his oldest daughter, Ivanka (left), in another attempt to appeal to women voters as she stars in a new campaign ad. 'The most important job any woman can have is being a mother, and it shouldn't mean taking a pay cut,' Ivanka Trump says as the ad begins. Ivanka, 34, who has three children and is an entrepreneur, says her father 'understands the needs of a modern workforce' and supports policies that 'allow women to support their families and further their careers'. The Republican presidential nominee (bottom right) noted Friday that his campaign hasn't spent much yet on television ads. He said he plans to put to good use the approximately $18 million he says he raised for his campaign and Republican partners on the day after Monday's debate. He said: 'We have some big plans for the final month.' And Ivanka's ad appearance is seemingly a huge part of those 'big plans'. The $7.5 million ad is scheduled to run on cable networks with large female audiences such as OWN, Lifetime and TLC. When the ad was tested in a focus group, it was reportedly 'off the charts' and 'one of the top performers' of the campaign's ads. During the ad, Trump is seen embracing women and listening to what they have to say. The ad also shows diverse families (top right) and working mothers.

Presidential candidate Donald Trump appeared in a softcore porn video in 2000 (main left), it's been revealed. Just hours after he lashed out at former Miss Universe Alicia Machado (right, with Trump) for a 'disgusting' sex tape which does not appear to exist (top inset), videos surfaced of Trump popping a bottle of champagne in a Playboy video. While Trump remains fully clothed, other scenes in the tape include naked women posing in sexual positions, touching themselves, and caressing each other. The VHS cover states: 'From luxuriating in a warm, soapy tub, to reveling at an exclusive night club, Carol and Darlene (inset bottom left) bare their sex appeal and lead you on a sensual journey of discovery.' Ironically, twin sisters Carol and Darlene Bernaola, expressed their pride in being both Latin and American back in 2000.

It is one of the biggest events in the sporting calendar, with golfing heavyweights battling it out to win the Ryder Cup - and attention has already turned to their glamorous wives and girlfriends cheering from the sidelines. As the biennial golfing contest got underway today there was a battle both on and off the course as the partners of Team Europe's Ryder Cup stars took on their American counterparts in the style stakes. Prince George and Princess Charlotte put on a beguiling royal appearance at a children's party in Canada this week. But eyes also turned to Prince William, who has come of age as a father. Whether it was juggling his young son and smearing soapy bubbles from his face, or attentively turning to his daughter when she called out for 'Dada', William displayed the parenting skills so rarely seen outside the privacy of his home. Earlier this year, William (pictured inset as a baby with Princess Diana) admitted that 'I still miss my mother every day'.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards unveiled a home-built drone that they said was capable of carrying bombs, state media reported on Saturday, in what appeared to be another copy of a reconnaissance U.S. drone that Iran captured five years ago.The drone, called Saegheh, or lightning, was unveiled at an expo showcasing the latest achievements by the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace arm.

This couple had been wed just quarter of an hour when they had their first fight. It started off OK as the groom fed the bride some wedding cake (left). But she teased him by pulling the spoon away as she took her turn (centre). He didn't see the funny side and smacked her hand away in anger (right). The clip - filmed at an unknown location - ends with the bride looking upset.

Susan Schneider (right, in 2015) told how her husband grew increasingly frustrated as the symptoms of Lewy Body Dementia set in, gradually taking hold of his body until his suicide in August 2014. The comedian (pictured centre just two months before he died) had begun to forget words, could no longer remember film lines and was having trouble going to the bathroom, she said. The night before he took his own life at their northern California home, the pair (left at the 2013 Emmy's) enjoyed the weekend together. Their final words to each other were: 'Goodnight, my love,' Schneider revealed on Friday.

A fantastically edited set of images offer a new look at some of the world's biggest objects - and how they stack up against other mammoth creations and creatures. The pictures were posted online by Kevin Wisbith and provide a thought-provoking dose of perspective that couldn't be seen without being digitally altered. One picture planted Chicago's Willis Tower (bottom right) - 1,729 feet tall - in the bottom of the Mir Mine in Russia, which is 1,722 feet deep. The Titantic, one of the largest ships ever when it was built at 882 feet and 9 inches, was resting on the deck of the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan (top right), which is 1,092 feet long, in one edited image. One of the most eye-catching images is of the Manhattan skyline (bottom left), edited to include the Burj Khalifa - the world's tallest building, which is located in Dubai. The largest oil tanker ever, the Seawise Giant, is 1,504 feet long and also features. But despite being the biggest ever, it would fit comfortably inside the main lake in Central Park.

A new book by father-of-two Brett Archibald from Camps Bay, South Africa (circled) recounts how he fell overboard from a tour boat off Indonesia - and was left alone in the sea for an astonishing 29 hours without a life jacket. before being found alive. The well-documented story of his miraculous survival is almost too good to be true. But it is one of the most gripping you will ever read.

NEW Vancouver police have confirmed one man has been charged after the body of missing Japanese student Natsumi Kogawa, 30 was found at a mansion in Vancouver's West End. William Victor Schneider, 48, was arrested in Vernon, British Colombia. and remains in custody in connection with her disappearance and subsequent death.

Lauren Etchells (pictured with Mr van der Merwe, daughter Kaydance and baby) has sparked an international hunt after fleeing from Canada to Britain with Marco van der Merwe. She and wife Tasha Brown (pictured inset, right) are said to have asked him for help conceiving a second child after they had daughter Kaydance with an online sperm donor. The women split, but teacher Miss Etchells went on to have the baby with IT expert Mr van der Merwe - and later declared that they were engaged.

Ms Hoffstetter, who has 15 years' experience of skydiving in the United States, had just waved off a man taking part in a tandem skydive when she realised the 'cutaway system' had broken. This meant she was unable to release the failed chute (left) leaving her spinning uncontrollably.(right, top and bottom). She said: 'I have cutaway and used my reserve four times prior to this without an issue, but this time the cutaway handle was stuck and would not move.' Ms Hoffstetter said she would have died if the failed chute had not been released.

Jacquelynne Olmedo stopped behind Deputy Manuel Edwards on the freeway in Houston, Texas, last Saturday when her two-year-old son, Michael Aydan (inset), turned blue. The officer grabbed her hands and told her: 'Believe and trust that this is going to pass and that God is with him and all of us right now." Within moments, the toddler, who suffers congenital heart disease, had begun improving. Deputy Manuels later visited the boy at Texas Children's Hospital (above left and right).

Usain Bolt showed no signs of slowing down as he partied the night away at Oktoberfest in Munich. The sprint star, who won three gold medals at the Rio Olympics in the summer, made his fourth successive visit Germany's most famous annual celebration. The cheeky Jamaican was unsurprisingly receiving a lot of attention from those in attendance, and happily got involved with the festivities (pictured left and right). Returning to Germany will have brought back happy memories for Bolt, who shattered both the 100m and 200m world records during the 2009 World Championships held in Berlin.

A Florida man booby trapped a Trump yard sign by running an electric current through it. In a video he claimed he was 'sick of people stealing his sign' and set up the trap, which caught a vandal. The clip, which has more than 870,000 views on YouTube, shows a sign that has apparently been rigged by the unidentified homeowner. A man who saw the sign while pushing a stroller came back later and tried to remove the Trump sign only to get jolted by an electric shock. The video claims the man was charged with trespassing but it's unclear if the man faced any penalty.

Nearly 100 years after Joseph E. Hughes (right) served in World War I, his dog tag (top left) appeared mysteriously on the side of a Massachusetts road. After a social media hunt, it was returned to his family. While walking his dog along Oliver Street in Randolph, Massachusetts, a good Samaritan noticed the tiny piece of metal and stopped to pick it up. Recognizing its value, the man brought the item to the Randolph Police Department on a day when officer Kevin Aldred (bottom left, left) was working. The metal tag bore Hughes' name and several numbers, although the circular plate was now weathered and chipped. Determined to get the dog tag back to its rightful owner, Aldred began a search for Hughes' family until he found the veteran's 66-year-old grandson and namesake Joe Hughes (bottom left, right).

An abandoned Soviet gulag has become a popular dive site for adventurous explorers and tombstone jumpers thanks to the crystal-clear lake that now submerge much of the building. Rummu prison (inset) in Estonia was abandoned some 25 years ago when Stalin's empire collapsed and more than half of the 75ft building has since been flooded. Scuba divers from across Europe now flock to the area to explore the ruins of the prison.

Some McDonald's customers like to stick to one favorite order - but others will go to great lengths to avoid fast-food ennui. These customers treat the traditional menu like a list of ingredients. Their best-known combinations have come to form a secret menu shared among those in the know. The Highway 5 motorway, in Lusi, southern Finland, had been cleared so pilots could practice using public roads. This is in case conventional runways are destroyed by enemy at the start of a conflict. The usual flow of vehicles on the road, which runs 560 miles from Lusi to Sodankylä in the north, was replaced by the thunderous noise of the F/A-18 fighters.(pictured taking off, left to right) European countries developed the concept of roadway landing strips during the Cold War amid fears of a nuclear conflict.

The images, taken in southern Ethiopia, capture members of the Suri tribe take part in a fighting ritual, at a time when their way of life is under threat. The clashes between villages are traditionally seen as a way of impressing women, and getting young men used to the bloodshed they will face if they go into battle with other tribes.
