Former Swansea striker Eder was their hero in extra time as he netted the only goal of the game with a low 25-yard strike. The victory saw Fernando Santos' side become European champions for the first time in their history.

The Portugal star came off second best after a challenge with West Ham's Dimitri Payet in the seventh minute of the final. The Frenchman won the ball cleanly with a forceful tackle but caught Ronaldo with his trailing leg. The Real Madrid man tried to continue and went off twice for treatment, the second time visibly in tears from the pain. The 31-year-old forward initially appeared fit enough to continue, albeit with his movement limited by the heavy strapping applied by the Portuguese medical team.
