'You never really leave': Sherlock's Amanda Abbington hints return to the show opposite ex Martin Freeman is possible... despite being killed off

She has recently been thrust into the spotlight thanks to both her career and personal life.

But it seems Amanda Abbington hasn't called time on Sherlock's Mary Watson yet, despite her character being killed off, and the show also starring her ex Martin Freeman.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1, the 42-year-old actress revealed that she was open to a return to the show, saying: 'I'm hoping that at some point Mary will come back and do something else.'

After being shot dead in the New Year's Day episode of the hit BBC drama, the actress explained that she hoped she would reprise her role in the future.

Having departed the show, where she played the role of her ex-partner Martin Freeman's wife, Amanda said she had been told that death didn't mean the end in Sherlock.

'You never really leave Sherlock,' she told DJ Greg James. 'And it's true, because they always do flashbacks and stuff like that. So I'm hoping that at some point Mary will come back and do something else.'

And true to the point, fans of the show have already seen Amanda in the programme following her death - in a recorded DVD and as an apparition.

Reflecting on her dramatic exit, where she took a bullet for Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes, she admitted it was the right thing for the character and show.

'It was a good run, and I love the fact that they killed her off,' she admitted. 'Because she had to die anyway, because they killed her in the books, and I quite liked the dramatic-ness of it. 

'You never really leave Sherlock. And it's true, because they always do flashbacks and stuff like that. So I'm hoping that at some point Mary will come back and do something else': she said

Seeing ghosts? And true to the point, fans of the show have already seen Amanda in the programme following her death - in a recorded DVD and as an apparition

'It was good. It was quite Bond-esque, and it felt quite dark and mysterious, and she takes a bullet, she's like a hero.'

Amanda and Martin - who plays John Watson - announced their split after 15 years together in December.

The former couple - who have two children, Joe, 11, and Grace, eight - have been keen to keep their relationship 'amicable'.

Announcing their separation in an interview with the Financial Times in December, Martin, star of The Hobbit trilogy, said:

'I’m not with Amanda any more. It’s very, very amicable — I’ll always love Amanda.'
