Paula Patton cast as protective mom in ABC summer series amid ongoing custody war with Robin Thicke

Amid recent personal problems, Paula Patton has something to smile about.

The 41-year-old actress will headline an upcoming ABC thriller called Somewhere Between, as 10 episodes of the Stephen Tolkin-written drama are slated to air this summer on the network.

In the series, the stunning Los Angeles native will play a protective mom named Laura Price who learns for certain that her daughter, Serena, will be killed, without any other details as so to prevent it from happening.

Patton, who's been featured in prominent roles in movies such as Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Precious, will shoot the series in Vancouver, Canada, where its production company, Thunderbird Entertainment. 

The show is adapted from a Korean source material.

The 5feet7 stunner previously appeared in a 2015 ABC pilot called Runner, and has also had guest spots on TV shows such as Single Ladies, Law & Order: SVU and the TV movie Murder Book.

Patton made even bigger headlines earlier Thursday when Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Colin Leis granted her a restraining order against her ex-husband, Robin Thicke, after claiming the Blurred Lines singer had past pushed and kicked her; and was uncooperative and aggressive during visits with their 6-year-old son Julian Fuego in the near-two years since their split. 

Thicke will also have to be supervised during his visits with the boy until the case returns to court next month.

The Give It 2 U singer, according to Patton, would not leave the home of her mother Joyce in a January 19 incident, only fleeing the scene when Joyce contacted the authorities.

Julian had previously been interviewed by social workers that day, Patton said, summing up the incident in court docs as 'terrifying' for her and the boy.

Patton told the court that the 39-year-old Lost Without U crooner did drugs, had cheated on her and once pushed and kicked her during a fight in April of 2013.

Patton had a 'reasonable apprehension of imminent serious bodily injury to herself and the child' based on his past actions, her legal team told the court.

Larry Ginsberg, the lawyer representing Thicke, said that Patton made the latest series of legal moves out of bitterness that she couldn't get the court this month to give her sole custody of her son; and is seeing to alienate the boy from his father.

'She is trying to take a second bite at the apple,' the lawyer said.

The next hearing in the contentious custody case is slated for February 24.
