New project: Sir Elton John will co-write a new musical version of The Devil Wears Prada

'Reimagining The Devil Wears Prada for the musical theatre is super exciting,' Elton told The Hollywood Reporter

'I'm a huge fan of both the book and the feature film and a huge aficionado of the fashion world. I can't wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture.'

The 2006 film adaptation starred Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, the fierce and demanding editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, while Anne Hathaway played put-upon intern Andrea Sachs.

The book and the film gained notoriety after it was claimed to be based on Weisberger's real-life experience working with U.S. Vogue Editor Anna Wintour.

The film was a smash hit at the box office, raking in a whopping $326m worldwide.

Elton will co-write the show alongside playwright Paul Rudnick who penned the stage shows Sister Act and I Hate Hamlet.

'To bring The Devil Wears Prada to the stage, we knew we needed to find artists as inimitable as the characters in the story,' said Bob Cohen of Fox Stage Productions which will co-produce the show.

'We needed artists whose work has run the gamut, from music and publishing to drama and fashion,' he told the website.

'We could think of only two names: Elton John and Paul Rudnick… That's all!'

The stage version has no date as yet, but joins a smattering of other film musicals which will make their way into the theatre, according to The Guardian

Disney musical Frozen will open on Broadway in spring next year while a stage musical version of French cinema hit Amélie about a quirky waitress hits the Great White Way in a few months time.
