DIY beach towel tote bag

Penny Flanagan

Looking for a beach bag that’s big enough to fit everyone’s stuff in? Try upcycling an old beach towel to make this capacious family beach bag. It’s perfectly equipped to withstand sand and sea.

What you need

  • 1 x old beach towel
  • 1m of webbing/belting (available at Spotlight)
  • a sewing machine

Activity

  • Lay the towel flat and decide which side will be the ‘right side’ or outside of your bag. Now fold the towel in half (along its width) so that the right sides are together.
  • Sew up two sides, leaving the top side (opposite the folded edge) open.
  • Now cut your webbing into two 50cm pieces (or however long you would like your shoulder straps to be).
  • Pin the straps in place, to the inside top edge of the bag. Sew these in place by sewing a square shape along each edge. This will ensure your straps stay secure once you’ve loaded the bag up with everyone’s stuff.
  • Voila! Your beach bag is ready for the beach.
