Australian Open: Mirka Federer's Gucci sweater causes a social media stir

Roger Federer reached his sixth Australian Open final overnight, staving off a determined Stan Wawrinka in a gritty five-set semi final.

But enough about the tennis.

Let's talk fashion.

Mirka Federer, a former professional tennis player who also helps manage her husband's career, whipped up a social media storm overnight, thanks to her hot pink sweater.

The Gucci sweater, which retails for $1975, stole the focus from the main event. Well, OK, not really - but it was one of the more impressive Australian Open fashion statements this year, at the very least.

The sweater, emblazoned with a roaring tiger, and featuring the French words L'aveugle par amour, translating to blind love, or blinded by love, received plenty of praise on social media throughout the match.

But there's bad news if you had a couple of grand hanging around ready to spend on a new jumper, with the item appearing to have sold out.

Come on Gucci, lift your game.

Mirka made headlines in 2014 after her husband was involved in a "bust-up" with Wawrinka at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals believed to be fuelled by Mirka's vocal support from the sidelines.

"She did the same thing at Wimbledon. Every time I'm on their side, she mouths off before the serve. It's insufferable," Wawrinka said to the umpire at the time.

Nevertheless, Mirka's expressive reactions to the rollercoaster match, which saw Wawrinka pull back a 0-2 deficit to force a fifth set, were on display for all to see.

At one point, her head slumped forward and rested on her forearms as her husband sent a backhand slice into the net, missing an opportunity to go 5-2 up in the decider.

All eyes will be on Rod Laver Arena on Sunday night, as Roger winds back the clock to 2010 - the last time he made the Australian Open final.

He will be the oldest grand slam finalist since 39-year-old Ken Rosewall at the 1974 US Open as he takes on the winner of the Rafael Nadal and Grigor Dimitrov clash.

And while the possibility of a Rafa-and-Roger duel will have tennis fans foaming at the mouth, fashion fiends could be forgiven for waiting with bated breath to see if Mirka can top her semi-final triumph.
