Stylishly spooky! Maison Margiela sends eerie illusion dress down the runway at couture show in Paris - and Instagram users can't get enough of the ghostly design

  • Creative director John Galiano showed his couture collection this week
  • The second to last look featured a spooky 3D face made out of tulle

Designers get major points for being innovative — that is, after all, how new trends are started — but one of the looks to come down the runway at Maison Margiela's couture show in Paris this week seems unlikely to catch on.

Probably more appropriate for the red carpet of a horror movie than the Oscars, the coat dress, look number 24, featured a ghostly face coming off the fabric.

Made with some creatively-applied tulle, the face on the illusion dress appears to be floating above the material.

Boo! A unique coat dress from Maison Margiela's couture show in Paris today has been taking over Instagram

It's certainly unique: A tulle face design on the front makes it appear as if a ghost is coming off the fabric

Designed by embattled creative director John Galliano — who was infamously caught on camera saying 'I love Hitler' to a couple at a Paris bar in 2011, after which he was fired from Dior — the dress seems to be the standout from the collection and is all over Instagram.

Most applauded the piece, which is surely unlike anything most have ever seen at Fashion Week before. The spooky confection has been called 'beautiful', 'genius', 'sublime', and 'brilliant'.

'That's what we call #hautecouture,' wrote one. 'Thank you @maisonmargiela to show us what haute couture is!'

Another wrote on Instagram: 'I have officially lost my breath. Long Live the King.'

How interesting... Make-up done by Pat McGrath included this 3D design on the face of model Barbora Podzimkova

Hello there! Other faces were featured in the collection, as was plenty of black, white, and red

A third chimed in: 'I literally lost my breath for a moment when I first saw this. This coat will be collected by museums everywhere.'

Several people included ghost emojis in their comments.

The face design was handmade by artist Benjamin Shine, who wrote on Instagram: 'What a day, and what an incredible few months it has been collaborating with the genius @jgalliano for the @maisonmargiela Artisanal Collection [which] launched today at Couture Fashion Week in Paris. It has been such a meaningful project in so many ways...'

The 'artisanal' collection also featured plenty of black, white, and red, cutouts, sheer fabrics, and even more faces.

The man behind it: The collection was designed by creative director John Galliano

Seriously, who says that? Galliano was fired from Dior in 2011 after video surfaced of him making antisemitic remarks, including 'I love Hitler'z

Finale: The last dress was this voluminous number, which seems to have been outshone by the piece before it
