This star is determined to 'slay cancer' and also help brighten others' lives while doing so.

Shannen Doherty hit the streets of New York on Thursday having flown in the two days prior from the West Coast.

The 45-year-old actress has decided to travel until April when she finds out whether the aggressive round of radiation therapy she just finished has impacted on her breast cancer.

The former Beverly Hills 90210 star looked well as she and a friend trotted around Manhattan's streets.

And while no one would blame Shannen for just wanting to focus on herself and beating cancer, the actress has decided her trip will also be about giving back.

First port of call was an ASPCA dog shelter where she not only had a tour, but watched vets spay and neuter some of the animals

Posting a picture of herself with some puppies and the staff on Instagram, she called on her fans to adopt or give what they can.

Not only was she doing good things, Shannen was looking good too.

For her visit to the no-kill shelter, the actress donned a pair of skinny blue jeans with a white cardigan and matching sweater under a statement red, white and black striped coat.

Keeping the cold at bay, Shannen added a big scarf and core lace-up heeled suede boots.
