Pop singer Lily Allen was blasted last night after describing gay people as 'fags' in a Tweet.

The 31-year-old posted a message on the social media site saying 'Fags hate Trump', prompting outrage over the use of the word.

The tweet was accompanied by a link to a Gay Times review of her version of Rufus Wainwright's Going To A Town, which she has recorded as a protest song against President Trump.

Lily Allen, left and right, was blasted on Twitter for using the word 'fags' to describe gay people

The singer tweeted the slogan 'Fags hate trump' alongside a review of a new protest song, complete with a picture of a placard bearing the same slogan

It also had a picture of the singer at a rally standing next to a sign bearing the same slogan.

Many were furious at her use of the word, with more than 50 people quickly replying.

One user called Chris Barley said: 'Please don't refer to us as FAGS, we are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender if anyone has to be labeled.'

Sally Sinammon added: 'Isn't it funny how some popstars, in their attempt to virtue signal, think they can speak on behalf of others?'

But other Twitter users were furious and said she should not be 'labelling' them

Others mocked her for 'thinking she can speak on behalf of others'

Ridler added: 'Would you call a black man a n***** because others do? No you wouldn't, don't call us. OK?'

Others argued the singer was just repeating a message that was on a sign at the rally and was not trying to cause offence.

Jay Campbell added on Twitter: 'Whoop, Whoop! Represent'n! Thanks for the shout out Lily!'
