From there, the driver turned left on to Bourke Street where he continued his rampage, leaving the street littered with the bodies of the dead and injured.

He was only brought to a stop after police barricaded the end of Bourke Street as it met Elizabeth Street before one officer shot him in the arm.

The man was then dragged from the vehicle, which was seen doing donuts in front of Flinders Street Station shortly beforehand and arrested him.

Police allege that man is Dimitrious Gargasoulas, 26, a Melbourne resident who is also believed to have been involved in a stabbing earlier the same day.

Witnesses claim before his alleged attack he was heard shouting about the end of the world, a comet in the sky, and accusing everyone of being 'sheep'.

Among the dead are 10-year-old Thalia Hakin, who was out walking with her mother and eight-year-old sister Maggie when all three were hit by the car.

Maggie was left with a broken leg, still in plaster as she attended her sister's funeral earlier this week, while her mother was too gravely injured to see her own daughter laid to rest.

Three-month-old Zachary Bryant was also killed during the attack, while his sister Zara, two, was badly injured but is now in stable condition.

There are still 17 people in hospital following the attack, two of whom are still in critical condition, more than a week on.

Gargasoulas has been charged with five counts of murder and has been remanded in custody to appear again in December while lawyers compile the extensive evidence to be used against him.
