"When I wrote Hunting: Gathering in 1987 I had grown tired of the 'composition etude' - the one-idea piece. I decided to try and write a piece which included as many different musical fragments as possible, strung together in a pseudo-narrative. To keep the fragments separate, each is written in a different key. As I wanted the different pieces to come and go in a random fashion like images or events on an unplanned journey, my principal problem was how to move from one key to another without any sense of development (i.e. without modulating). I was also consciously trying to keep the overall scale of events constant, not allowing one piece to dominate others unduly - rather like viewing everything against a fixed background. Although the piece is in three sections it is conceived as one movement or, more precisely, one journey, and should therefore always be played in its entirety.

In Hunting: Gathering I made reference to many different pieces of music:
ranging from very rough approximations of style to more or less precise transcription. The principal ones are: the first half of the ritornello melody at the beginning of the piece is derived from Maz sa goala (the lyre of the initiates), a piece of the music of the Hamar of South, Ethiopia,there's a fleeting reference to a variant of the Shona mbira tune Nyamaropa (Zimbabwe) at bar 65; at bar 1-25 a remembered unaccompanied tune sung by two (Xhosa?) girls (I'd lost the original source when I wrote the piece). at bar 162 the style, but not a quote of lesiba music from Lesotho (the lesiba is a single-stringed instrument which is blown!); Malienne kora music at bar 265; and a small set of variations on the piece Muthambe (bar 387f) which was played by a famous 19th century mbira player and medium, Pasipamire, of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. There are also several more private references to Scarlatti, Handel, Stravinsky and my own earlier work. With the exception of the mbira pieces all have been harmonically or melodically altered and, on occasion, combined with one another to suit my purposes.
The piece was commissioned by Doris and Myron Beigler and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts for the Kronos Quartet."

Courtship of peacock spider Maratus volans from Australia, one of the most amazing spectacles in the animal world, filmed, edited and narrated by myself (Jurgen Otto). This was the FIRST EVER footage of this spider and I don't know anybody who has actually seen this behaviour in this species before I did ! But what I am mostly proud of its that I was able to shoot the entire video in the wild, and with a very simple setup (Canon 7d SLR), in contrast to all other footage of this species that has since been broadcast. I am also proud of f the fact that with this video I introduced David Attenborough to peacock spiders a couple of years ago !
If you watch the episode courtship in "Life stories" you might get the impression that the female of this species eats the male after they mated. This is "artistic licence". I watched them mating countless times and have not once observed the male being eaten by the female after they mated. Males get sometimes eaten by females, that is true, but this does not seem to involve the male they actually mated with, but rather those that are "silly" enough to continue to court gravid (fertilised) females. From the female's perspective these males have become useless as partner but are very useful as additional nourishment for her developing brood, they die anyway at the end of the season, whether they are eaten by females or not.
I also doubt that females judge the male's performance and eat those that don't stack up. From what I have seen virgin females will mate with pretty much every male they come across, it seems to be more a matter of the right place and time rather than the quality of its performance, but I believe that is still being studied and it will be interesting to see the results of that. If a female is not happy to mate with a particular female her first reaction is to walk away from him, as you would expect.

Volans
Volans is a constellation in the southern sky. It represents a flying fish; its name is a shortened form of its original name, Piscis Volans. Volans was one of twelve constellations created by Petrus Plancius from the observations of Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman and it first appeared on a 35-cm diameter celestial globe published in 1597 (or 1598) in Amsterdam by Plancius with Jodocus Hondius. The first depiction of this constellation in a celestial atlas was in Johann Bayer's Uranometria of 1603.
History
Volans is one of the 12 constellations that were introduced by the Dutch navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman in the late 16th century. It was first depicted on Petrus Plancius’ globe in 1598. Plancius called the constellation Vliegendenvis (flying fish).
In 1603, Johann Bayer included the constellation in his star atlas Uranometria under the name Piscis Volans, the flying fish. It was known by that name until the mid-19th century, when John Herschel suggested that the name be shortened to just Volans.

I decided to try and write a piece which included as many different musical fragments as possible, strung together in a pseudo-narrative. To keep the fragments separate, each is written in a different key. As I wanted the different pieces to come and go in a random fashion like images or events on an unplanned journey, my principal problem was how to move from one key to another without any sense of development (i.e. without modulating). I was also consciously trying to keep the overall scale of events constant, not allowing one piece to dominate others unduly - rather like viewing everything against a fixed background. Although the piece is in three sections it is conceived as one movement or, more precisely, one journey, and should therefore always be played in its entirety.

Courtship of peacock spider Maratus volans from Australia, one of the most amazing spectacles in the animal world, filmed, edited and narrated by myself (Jurgen Otto). This was the FIRST EVER footage of this spider and I don't know anybody who has actually seen this behaviour in this species before I did ! But what I am mostly proud of its that I was able to shoot the entire video in the wild, and with a very simple setup (Canon 7d SLR), in contrast to all other footage of this species that has since been broadcast. I am also proud of f the fact that with this video I introduced David Attenborough to peacock spiders a couple of years ago !
If you watch the episode courtship in "Life stories" you might get the impression that the female of this species eats the male after they mated. This is "artistic licence". I watched them mating countless times and have not once observed the male being eaten by the female after they mated. Males get sometimes eaten by females, that is true, but this does not seem to involve the male they actually mated with, but rather those that are "silly" enough to continue to court gravid (fertilised) females. From the female's perspective these males have become useless as partner but are very useful as additional nourishment for her developing brood, they die anyway at the end of the season, whether they are eaten by females or not.
I also doubt that females judge the male's performance and eat those that don't stack up. From what I have seen virgin females will mate with pretty much every male they come across, it seems to be more a matter of the right place and time rather than the quality of its performance, but I believe that is still being studied and it will be interesting to see the results of that. If a female is not happy to mate with a particular female her first reaction is to walk away from him, as you would expect.

This bizarre creature looks like a real baby dragon! The Draco Volans are found in the Philippines, Indonesia & Malaysia. They looks just like a baby dragon as..they're not very big at all, only growing about the size of a tea cup. Kinda makes you wonder if their ancestors were responsible for the myth of the fire-breathing dragons we know today? They feast almost exclusively on ants and termites. While frequently referred to as "flying dragons," Draco Volans don't actually fly, they glide. The wings of flying animals tend to be an adaptation of their forelimbs, becoming broader and longer to achieve lift. Flying dragons, by contrast, are able to glide by an extension of their rib cage. This bizarre creature looks like a real baby dragon! The Draco Volans are found in the Philippines, Indonesia & Malaysia.
They looks just like a baby dragon as..they're not very big at all, only growing about the size of a tea cup.
Kinda makes you wonder if their ancestors were responsible for the myth of the fire-breathing dragons we know today?
They feast almost exclusively on ants and termites.
While frequently referred to as "flying dragons," Draco Volans don't actually fly, they glide. The wings of flying animals tend to be an adaptation of their forelimbs, becoming broader and longer to achieve lift. Flying dragons, by contrast, are able to glide by an extension of their rib cage.
They might not be able to flap wings to sustain flight, but they are able to glide for distances up to 26 feet (or 8 meters). That's 39 times the length of their bodies. If YOU could glide that far, you'd easily sail over 3 to 4 average American houses.
These dragons spend the majority of their lives in trees as the males are very territorial, marking 2 or 3 trees as their turf with a couple of females inhabiting each tree.

This bizarre creature looks like a real baby dragon! The Draco Volans are found in the Philippines, Indonesia & Malaysia.
They looks just like a baby dragon as..they're not very big at all, only growing about the size of a tea cup.
Kinda makes you wonder if their ancestors were responsible for the myth of the fire-breathing dragons we know today?
They feast almost exclusively on ants and termites.
While frequently referred to as "flying dragons," Draco Volans don't actually fly, they glide. The wings of flying animals tend to be an adaptation of their forelimbs, becoming broader and longer to achieve lift. Flying dragons, by contrast, are able to glide by an extension of their rib cage.
They might not be able to flap wings to sustain flight, but they are able to glide for distances up to 26 feet (or 8 meters). That's 39 times the length of their bodies. If YOU could glide that far, you'd easily sail over 3 to 4 average American houses.
These dragons spend the majority of their lives in trees as the males are very territorial, marking 2 or 3 trees as their turf with a couple of females inhabiting each tree.

Within the context of the Gerhard Richter exhibition, American percussionist and composer Robyn Schulkowsky recently performed at Fondation Beyeler. In this conversation with Mirjam Baitsch (Fondation Beyeler), she talks about what fascinates her about percussion, her work with John Cage, and Gerhard Richter's paintings – and she also shows how to play a cactus!
Percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky was born in South Dakota, USA. She studied at the University of Iowa, the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. In 1980 she moved to Cologne (Germany), to study with Christoph Caskel. Since then, she lives in Europe. Robyn Schulkowsky has premiered and recorded some of the most important percussion works of the 20th and 21st centuries. She has been working with composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Kevin Volans, John Cage, Morton Feldman and Iannis Xenakis.
