BOSMAN, Leonard Lewis ("Len") 5 February 1924 – 6 February 2017 Late of Darling Point, formerly of Hurstville. Len was the beloved son of Harold and Ethel (nee Wiggins) and siblings Ron, Hilda, Stan, Lillian and Mavis (all deceased); much loved father of Tony, Rod and Lyndel and father-in-law of Marilyn, Sue and Kimball; dearly loved grandfather of Michael, Anna, Tom and Joel; loved uncle to David (dec), Marilyn, Ian, Paul (dec), Deborah, Leigh, Richard, Harley (dec), Jill (dec), Diane, Mervyn, Geoffrey and Glenys, fond brother-in-law, and great-uncle of their families. Len was a man of great achievement and devotion to community service throughout his admirable life. An inspirational patriarch in the lives of his extended family and respected by his many friends. After being a member of the CMF, he served in the AIF in Australia at Headquarters Eastern Command during the Second World War. Later he established a successful catering business in Hurstville. He served his industry on the executive of the Restaurant and Catering Trades Organisation of NSW, and as a member of the Council of the Ryde College of Catering (now the Ryde Campus of the Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE). He was a foundation member, and later Fellow, of the Catering Institute of Australia. Throughout his life Len participated and contributed in full measure to the life of the Australian community in many areas, and from an early age. Service to others was a mainstay of Len's long life, and that service was delivered over six decades. As a young man he was Captain of the South Sydney Amateur Athletics Club from 1945 to 1947, and NSW 440 yard hurdle State Champion in 1947. He was an active member of the Hurstville Methodist Church for many years, serving for a time as its Sunday School Superintendent. Len was recognised by a number of organisations for his distinguished service to them over many years, including the award of Life Governorship of the Apex Clubs of Australia and of the Association of Civilian Widows of Australia, and Life Membership of the Australian Lone Parent Family Support Service – The Australian Birthright Movement of which he was also its foundation President. In 1961 and 1962 during his time as an Apex member he was the Convenor of World Projects for the World Council of Young Men's Service Clubs and in that capacity organised in 36 countries funds for the establishment of a Chair of Race Relations at Harare, Zimbabwe and for the expansion, throughout the world, of the role of the London based Save the Children Fund. Len was a Member of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Australia representing the electors of the NSW electorate of St. George from 1963 to 1969, and was a Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Committee on Aircraft Noise from 1965 to 1969. He was a National President of the Association of the Former Members of the Parliament of Australia, and an Honorary Associate Member of the Association of Former Members of the Parliament of New Zealand. Aged 93 years Remembered with love and great respect for a life well-lived, a life devoted to service to the community Len's family and friends are invited to attend his farewell at the Newington College Chapel, 200 Stanmore Road, Stanmore on THURSDAY (February 16th, 2017) commencing at 2:00 pm. Len had provided seed capital for a school bursary for the education of socio-economically deprived children. At Len's request, in lieu of flowers donations are invited in support of that bursary. Donations may be made to the 'Newington Foundation' and are tax deductible.
