A mother has taken to social media to warn parents about the latest social media stunt - where YouTubers use hand sanitiser and aluminium foil to set their hands "alight" - after her eight-year-old son sustained second degree burns when he attempted to recreate the dangerous "fire bending" trick.

New Hampshire mum, Tashia Souther-DiTucci, posted about the incident on Facebook, asking parents to please pay attention to what their children are watching.

"My kids watched a YouTube video of 2 dumbass' lighting shit on fire with hand sanitizer and see the result," she wrote, above a picture of her son, James, recovering in hospital.

"They poured the sanitiser over the shirt that James was wearing and lit it on fire..." she wrote. "It went up in flames and burnt him EXTREMELY BAD!! He has 2nd degree burns on his chest, stomach, thighs and the worst...his hands! About 30% of his body is burnt!"

Ms  Souther-DiTucci thought her two sons and their cousin were asleep when she heard "god-awful, blood-curdling cries and screams". James then came downstairs, "really red" and covered in burns.

The mum told WCVB that she can't imagine the pain her son is going through, explaining that the whole top layer of skin on the top of his hand has gone.

"You don't see what happens after they stop that video," she said. "My son is living proof of what can and will happen when you do things like that."

James is currently being treated at Boston Hospital where, according to Ms Souther-DiTucci, he faces a "long road to recovery".
The outcome, however, could have been far worse.
" [Doctors] said if my son was on fire for more than another minute, he would've been dead," she said. "It would've smothered his lungs, and he wouldn't have made it."
