Ahrar

Ahrar or Al Ahrar is an Arabic word meaning free ones (singular is Al Hurr). It can also be translated also as liberal. It is also name of many political parties and groupings.

Ahrar ash-Sham

Harakat Ahrar ash-Sham al-Islamiyya (Arabic: حركة أحرار الشام الإسلامية‎, translit. Ahrār ash-Shām, lit. "Islamic Movement of the Free Men of the Levant") is a coalition of multiple Islamist and Salafist units that coalesced into a single brigade in order to fight against the Ba'athist government led by Bashar al-Assad during the Syrian Civil War. Ahrar ash-Sham was led by Hassan Aboud until his death in 2014. In July 2013, Ahrar ash-Sham had 10,000 to 20,000 fighters, making it the second single most powerful unit fighting against al-Assad, after the Free Syrian Army. It was the principal organization operating under the umbrella of the Syrian Islamic Front and is a major component of the Islamic Front. The group along with Jaysh al-Islam are the main rebel groups supported by Turkey and Saudi Arabia. The group aims to create an Islamic state under Sharia law.Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Russia have designated Ahrar ash-Sham as a terrorist organization. Some U.S. officials have reportedly considered designating it as a terrorist organization because of its alleged links to al-Qaeda.

Dany Chamoun

Dany Chamoun (Arabic: داني شمعون‎) (26 August 1934 – 21 October 1990) was a prominent Lebanese politician. A Maronite Christian, the younger son of former President Camille Chamoun and brother of Dory Chamoun, Dany Chamoun was also a politician in his own right, and was known for his opposition to the occupation of Lebanese territory by foreign forces, whether Syrian or Israeli.

Early life and education

Chamoun was born in Deir el-Qamar on 26 August 1934. He was the younger son of the former President Camille Chamoun. He studied civil engineering in the United Kingdom.

Political career

Chamoun reported that he had not had any interest in politics before the Lebanon civil war. He became the National Liberal Party Secretary of Defense in January 1976, after the death of its predecessor Naim Berdkan. As Supreme Commander of the NLP's military wing, the Tigers, he also played a major role in the early years of the Lebanese Civil War.

In 1976, the NLP Tigers under Dany's command along with the Phalangist Kataeb Regulatory Forces, Al-Tanzim and Guardians of the Cedars formed a joined militia command under the name Lebanese Forces.
