The Guildhall School of Music and Drama is an independent music and dramatic arts school which was founded in 1880 in London, England. Students can pursue courses in Music, Opera, Drama and Technical Theatre Arts. The modern Guildhall School is the only major European conservatoire which is both a music school and a drama school, and one which is involved in technical theatre, professional development and music therapy.
The School currently numbers almost 900 students, approximately 700 of whom are undergraduate and postgraduate music students and 175 on the Acting and Technical Theatre programmes. In any given year, about 40% of the students are from outside the UK, typically representing over 50 nationalities.
The current chairman of Guildhall is David Andrew Graves (Alderman), elected a governor in 2009 he quickly excelled to deputy of the board to chairman by 2012. Guildhall’s principal is Professor Barry Ife. He has made the Guildhall School the UK’s single largest provider of music education to under 18s by incorporating the Centre for Young Musicians (CYM) and creating new music ‘hubs’ in Norfolk and Somerset; he has achieved recognition for Guildhall’s music outreach and opera programmes through two Queen’s Anniversary Prizes (2005 and 2007); and he has realised the School’s long-held ambition to build additional facilities at Milton Court (opened September 2013), including performance venues, rehearsal and teaching spaces.
A guildhall is either a town hall, or a building historically used by guilds for meetings and other purposes, in which sense it can also be spelled as "guild hall" and may also be called a "guild house". It is also the official or colloquial name for many of these specific buildings, many of which are now museums.
In the United Kingdom, outwith Scotland, a guildhall is usually a town hall: in the vast majority of cases, the guildhalls have never served as the meeting place of any specific guild. A suggested etymology is from the Anglo Saxon "gild", or "payment"; the guildhall being where citizens came to pay their rates. For the Scottish municipal equivalent see Tolbooth.
A school is an institution designed for the teaching of students (or "pupils") under the direction of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is commonly compulsory. In these systems, students progress through a series of schools. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in the Regional section below) but generally include primary school for young children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education. An institution where higher education is taught, is commonly called a university college or university.
In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also attend schools before and after primary and secondary education. Kindergarten or pre-school provide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3–5). University, vocational school, college or seminary may be available after secondary school. A school may also be dedicated to one particular field, such as a school of economics or a school of dance. Alternative schools may provide nontraditional curriculum and methods.
The imagination is a muscle; perhaps the most important muscle in the body. Ken Rea's legendary acting classes at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama are designed to train and expand that muscle of the imagination. Although a lot of the exercises might seem wildly over-the-top, Ken stresses 'we must always be truthful. As an audience we must never see the exercise, we must never be aware of your technique. You learn your technique in order to make that invisible'. Ken also has a gift for empowering students to feel that they can create their own work. Other faculty members also teach acting; Wyn Jones teaches a technique called 'Look, Move, Speak', while Martin Connor takes students through the work of Stanislavsky and Meisner. A large part of learning about acting also takes place durin...
Sundial Court is the student hall of residence for the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. It's situated only a few minutes walk from the School's main building on Silk Street, making it ideal for students wanting to immerse themselves in the busy life of the School. Self-contained flats provide a homely environment, yet one that is also close to the School's thriving Student Union bar in Sundial Court basement. It's also a stone's throw away from a supermarket for everyday shopping needs, and close to two tube stations for access to everything else that London has to offer. -- View all our films about life at the Guildhall School by visiting http://www.gsmd.ac.uk and clicking on 'Tour'. -- Production credits: Harold Raitt (director, interviews, editor) and Ludovic Lasserre (location so...
Nikesh Patel (a student on the BA Acting course at the Guildhall School) takes fellow students Kai West (postgraduate double bass) and Kate Hall (BA Technical Theatre Arts) on a tour of some of the rooms in the school used by actors. The first two years of the acting course concentrate on developing skills in movement, voice and various different approaches to acting. A lot of this work takes place in classrooms (where Nikesh shows us a film acting class in progress) or in the Gymnasium In the third year, the rehearsal room becomes increasingly important as the focus moves onto a succession of fully-staged performances either in the Silk Street Theatre, or external venues such as the Pit or the Bridewell Theatre. -- View all our films about life at the Guildhall School by visiting...
Some insight into what an audition at Guildhall drama school is like!
Kai West (postgraduate double bassist at the Guildhall School) takes fellow students Nikesh Patel (BA Acting) and Kate Hall (BA Technical Theatre Arts) on a tour of some of the rooms in the school used by musicians. Students spend many hours of their time at Guildhall in the practice rooms in the main building or the practice annexe. But all of this is with a strong sense of focus on performance projects in spaces such as the Silk Street Theatre, Lecture Recital Room, Music Hall or the Barbican Concert Hall next door in the world-famous Barbican Arts Centre. -- View all our films about life at the Guildhall School by visiting http://www.gsmd.ac.uk and clicking on 'Tour'. -- Production credits: Harold Raitt (director and editor), Mike Marriage (Steadicam) and Neil McIntyre (s...

Patsy Rodenburg, Head of Voice at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (and formerly Head of Voice at the National Theatre), is internationally renowned as an expert on verse speaking, so her classes on Shakespeare are a particular highlight of the voice programme at the Guildhall School. She challenges her students to be specific, to be realistic rather than falsifying or pushing emotions, and to engage fully with the heightened emotional situations in which Shakespeare's characters frequently find themselves. Her classes are a mix of erudite general knowledge and specific textual reference and analysis which provide revelation after revelation for the participants in the classes. According to one student 'she really gets to the raw emotion and then puts the intellectualism on top of i...
The body has to be trained so that the actor is in charge of it, rather than it being in charge of the actor. A key goal is finding the readiness to act spontaneously. This process starts from humble beginnings; the first movement lesson at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama sets the apparently simple task of standing still. A lot of movement work is to do with relationships with other people, rather than just the actor's own internal physical relationships; this video includes footage of a mask workshop with Head of Movement Wendy Allnutt, and a class on the second year '20 Movements' project with Danny McGrath. Movement classes open up the opportunity for actors to play parts which don't conform to their own expected character types, and to be free of unwanted and potentially debilita...
Video projection mapping is an exciting technique which can transform almost any surface -- a product, a shape, even a building - into a dynamic video display. The effects can be truly extraordinary. Further than creative projects alone, projection mapping techniques have been employed in advertisements, product launches, music videos and 'experiential' brand events. The Guildhall School has the in-house expertise and specialised equipment to help you create your own immersive and interactive experiences. We can provide bespoke consultation, drawing on our combined expertise in event management and technical innovation, to give your project the highest quality of service. Take a look at this short film to find out more about projection mapping and what it can do.
This film features a walk through the City of London, starting at the Barbican Estate and finishing at the Southwark side of London Bridge. It highlights the varied architecture of the city including the 1960s brutalist buildings of the Barbican Estate, to the high-tech glass skyscrapers and historic gothic, regency and classic buildings, monuments and statues. Part of the film has been made on the high level walkways which stem from the Barbican estate, allowing an elevated view of the surroundings. From London Walls the film goes to street level. If you are visiting London and would like to see the sights for yourself, the best way is to walk, rather than take public transport. This walk is one I would definitely recommend. In the film, the following sights, streets and features are hig...
