Flag Lowering Ceremony

Following their strong tradition for Australia Day, the Order of Australia Association, will again hold the annual Flag Lowering Ceremony, at the Shrine of Remembrance, St Kilda Road, Melbourne.

This will be a significant ceremony recognising the second centenary year of the First World War and Gallipoli, and the heritage significance of the Shrine of Remembrance of that war.

Dr Joshua Funder, will give the Commemoration Address on this occasion, his subject: Watson’s Pier.

The Pier was built by Joshua Funder’s great grandfather, James Watson, at the end of the Battle of Gallipoli. The Pier allowed the Australian Soldiers, to be safely evacuated from the peninsula of Gallipoli, at the end of the War in December 1915.

The Ceremony will include the trooping by the Australian Navy Band, and the 401 Air Cadet Squadron from HMAS Cerberus, a wreath laying, the Reading of the Ode to the Fallen, and the Lowering of the Flag.

The Ceremony will commence at 4.20pm, when visitors will assemble at the Second World War Forecourt (in the vicinity of the Eternal Flame), adjacent to the Shrine.
