Text of a statement from the Hamilton Local of Common Cause

The so-called “War on Terror” has been in full swing since 2001 and the scope of destruction and domination by Western powers has been steadily increasing. Resistance to the occupation has only intensified and shows no sign of slowing down since Harper’s decision to follow the US into Central Asia.

October 27th Day of Action Against the War
Statement from Common Cause Hamilton

Today activists in Hamilton join others across Canada to voice their opposition to the occupation of Afghanistan. The so-called “War on Terror” has been in full swing since 2001 and the scope of destruction and domination by Western powers has been steadily increasing. Resistance to the occupation has only intensified and shows no sign of slowing down since Harper’s decision to follow the US into Central Asia.

While victims of this imperialist war in Afghanistan are being killed by coalition soldiers, tortured in prisons and having any sense of dignity trampled on, closer to home our rights are also being stripped in the name of “national security”. Security for whom? Secret trials are taking place for those who are deemed a threat wherein those accused have no opportunity to defend themselves along with a number fundamental rights taken away.

As anarchists we recognize that we must not limit our outrage to this war alone. We realize that in order to put an end to imperialistic wars we must put an end to the systems that produce and facilitate such forms of aggression and control. The insatiable thirst of capitalism is what drives the need for control over people and resources, and those at the helm of the war machine are the only ones who are going to benefit. Even if it was their intention , the truth is that no Canadian government could ever know what the people of Afghanistan need for freedom and self determination.
