Poor Nicole Kidman! Academy Award-nominated film Lion accidentally names Naomi Watts as its supporting actress in spectacular social media fail 

If ever you needed a reminder not to make big decisions in the early hours of the morning, this would be it.

Promoters for the Academy Award- nominated film Lion suffered a spectacular social media fail this Tuesday morning when they briefly uploaded a poster that incorrectly named its supporting actress Nicole Kidman as Naomi Watts. 

The poster, which was uploaded to the film's official Twitter page, boasted of Lion's Academy Award nominations, before listing each award below.

Fans were quick to pick up on the unfortunate mistake, prompting the page to quietly remove the image hours later. 

In reality, Naomi Watts didn't receive a single Academy Award nomination this year, having instead has found herself up for a 2016 Golden Raspberry statuette for worst actress.

Meanwhile, Nicole is celebrating the success of Lion, which has seen her earn both Oscar and Academy Award nods.

Lion received six nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Dev Patel, Best Adapted Screenplay for Australian Luke Davies and Best Cinematography for his countryman Greig Fraser.

Australian film Hacksaw Ridge also garnered six nominations including Andrew Garfield for Best Actor, as well as Australians Andy Wright, Robert Mackenzie and Peter Grace (Sound Mixing), Wright and Mackenzie (Sound Editing) and John Gilbert (Film Editing). 

It also seems that Mel Gibson's path to Hollywood redemption is almost complete, as the Australian director received two nominations - one for Best Director and another as producer for Hacksaw Ridge in the Best Picture category.

It was an outstanding nominations announcement for Australian films.

Her first nomination for a role in which she used an Australian accent, Naomi faces stiff competition in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Viola Davis, nominated for Fences, starts as the favourite with bookmakers after winning a raft of awards for the performance already, including at the Golden Globes. 

Michelle Williams, recognised for her role in Manchester by the Sea is also at short odds, while Naomie Harris (Moonlight) and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) are also strong contenders.
