Ian Randal Fisher is a United States-based British physicist and Director of the Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials at Stanford University.
Ian R. Fisher was born and educated in the United Kingdom. He did his undergraduate study at the School of Physics and Space Research at the University of Birmingham in England from 1989 to 1992. He graduated with a BSc in physics from Birmingham University in 1993. He was a research assistant at the New Zealand Institute for Industrial Research, in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, in 1993. He did his PhD at the University of Cambridge, in England from 1993 to 1996.
Fisher was appointed Director of the Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials at Stanford University, in the United States in 2013. He was also appointed Professor of Applied Physics at Stanford University in 2013. He heads the Fisher Research Group at the Gaballe Laboratory.
Ian Fisher receives funding from the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to support his research in the synthesis and physical properties of exotic new materials.
Charles Ian Fisher (born October 4, 1965) is an American journalist who is a deputy executive editor at The New York Times. From 2008 to 2011, he was deputy foreign editor. He served two years as day editor for The Times home page, and 2013 was named assistant managing editor in charge of newsroom digital operations. He remains in charge of digital operations in his new position.
Fisher graduated from Boston University in 1987 and began his newspaper career at The Sun in Lowell, Massachusetts. In 1990, he joined The New York Times as a clerk and was promoted to reporter in 1992.
From 1998 to 2001, Fisher was the New York Times' East Africa bureau chief (based in Nairobi, Kenya). He was bureau chief for Eastern Europe and the Balkans from 2001 to 2004. From 2004 to 2008, he was the paper's bureau chief in Rome. He covered various conflicts, including Iraq and the second intifada in Israel.
Fisher is married to Selma Kalousek, a photography editor.
