If you love the smell of Napalm in the morning, get your game on.
George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola are spearheading development of a new video game based on Coppola's iconic Vietnam War film. Apocalypse Now.
The Hollywood heavyweights' American Zoetrope film studio has partnered with gaming industry leaders to put a survival horror spin on the 1979 film starring Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen and Robert Duvall, EW.com reported on Wednesday.
Back in the day: It took director Francis Ford Coppola three years to complete the now iconic 1979 Vietnam War movie which may now be made into a video game
The production team isn't roping in a AAA-rated game studio to produce the project, opting to raise an initial $900,000 through Kickstarter and go it alone.
'Forty years ago, I set out to make a personal art picture that could hopefully influence generations of viewers for years to come,' Coppola said in a statement.
'Today, I’m joined by new daredevils, a team who want to make an interactive version of Apocalypse Now, where you are Captain Benjamin Willard amidst the harsh backdrop of the Vietnam War.' Willard is Sheen's character in the film.
Tough job: The movie starred Marlon Brando and Martin Sheen, seen here. Conditions were so awful in the Philippines where it shot that Sheen had a breakdown and a heart attack
'I’ve been watching video games grow into a meaningful way to tell stories,' Coppola continued, 'and I’m excited to explore the possibilities for Apocalypse Now for a new platform and a new generation.'
The well qualified team includes Rob Auten, a lead writer for Gears Of War, Battlefield and Far Cry, plus executive producer and co-director Lawrence Liberty, whose credits include Fallout: New Las Vegas and The Witcher.
They are joined by Montgomery Markland, lead producer on Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides Of Numenera plus John Sawyer, co-director of Fallout: New Las Vegas.
New project: American Zeotrope, the studio co-founded by George Lucas, pictured, and Coppola, are backing the team behind the game which aims to raise $900,000 on Kickstarter
Modern icon: Director Coppola, seen at an LA event last July, said of the game, 'I’m excited to explore the possibilities for Apocalypse Now for a new platform and a new generation'
The iconic Apocalypse Now, updating Joseph Conrad's book Heart Of Darkness to the 20-year Vietnam War, was released in 1979.
It took three years to make after a shoot ridden with problems in the Philippines.
Brando arrived on set unprepared and massively overweight while Sheen had a mental breakdown and a heart attack during filming.
However, it was a popular and critical hit, winning five Oscars including best picture, best director for Coppola and best supporting actor for Robert Duvall.
Another Hollywood heavyweight: Marlon Brando, who arrived on set massively overweight, and Sheen in the iconic Vietnam War film based on Joseph Conrad's Heart Of Darkness
