Tablet is a daily online magazine of Jewish news, ideas, and culture. Launched in June 2009, it’s a project of the not-for-profit Nextbook Inc., which also produces the Nextbook Press Jewish Encounters book series. Our archive holds all the articles and features that originally appeared on the website Nextbook.org.
WRITING FOR TABLET MAGAZINE
Tablet welcomes submissions from freelance writers. Please submit a full pitch—including a detailed description of what you’d like to write, a brief biography, links to previously published stories, and, if necessary, a short writing sample—to the appropriate section editor. Do not submit a completed piece. Successful pitches will display a working knowledge of Tablet Magazine and the content it publishes. News and Politics does not accept freelance opinion or editorial (op-ed) writing. We are not currently accepting unsolicited fiction or poetry.

Stephanie assists with special editorial projects and is Tablet’s unofficial Drake correspondent. She has written for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and contributed an essay to the anthology God, Faith & Identity from the Ashes: Reflections of Children and Grandchildren of Holocaust Survivors. She earned a bachelor’s degree in religion from Duke University and a master’s in religious studies with a specialization in journalism from NYU.

Matthew handles both cultural and news coverage for Tablet magazine. He is the author of Solomon’s Island, and he has reported from Cambodia, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, India, Israel, Uganda, and Venezuela for Tablet, VQR, Boston Review, The New York Times, and other publications.

Wayne Hoffman, executive editor
Wayne, who also oversees Tablet’s Life & Religion section, previously served as managing editor at The Forward, Billboard, and the New York Blade. His cultural reporting has appeared in the Washington Post, Village Voice, The Nation, Instinct, and elsewhere. He has published three novels—An Older Man, Hard, and Sweet Like Sugar—and edited the anthology What We Brought Back: Jewish Life After Birthright. His essays and short fiction appear in several collections, including Best Gay Stories 2010, I Like It Like That, Mama’s Boy, and Generation Q. He has a bachelor’s degree in social politics from Tufts, and a master’s in American studies from NYU.
Marjorie Ingall, contributing writer
Marjorie writes about Life & Religion for Tablet Magazine. The former “East Village Mamele” columnist for the Forward, she’s also been a contributing writer at Self, a contributing editor at Glamour, and senior writer at Sassy. She has written for The New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, New York, Ms. and other publications. She’s the author of The Field Guide to North American Males and the co-author of Hungry. She’s currently writing a book about the Jewish Mother for Harmony Books (an imprint of Crown).
Etgar Keret, who writes a regular column from Israel for Tablet Magazine, is the author of eight books, including, most recently, The Seven Good Years. He has contributed to The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and This American Life. Keret is also a filmmaker, and his 2007 movie, Jellyfish, won the Camera d’Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Adam Kirsch is a contributing editor for Tablet Magazine and the author of Benjamin Disraeli, a biography in the Nextbook Press Jewish Encounters book series.
Josh Lambert, a Tablet Magazine contributing editor and comedy columnist, is the academic director of the Yiddish Book Center, Visiting Assistant Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and author most recently of Unclean Lips: Obscenity, Jews, and American Culture.
Liel Leibovitz, senior writer
Liel is the author, most recently, of A Broken Hallelujah: Rock and Roll, Redemption, and the Life of Leonard Cohen. A native of Tel Aviv, he completed his doctoral studies in communications at Columbia University, researching the ontology of video games. This means he spends more time playing games than a grown man should.
Joan Nathan is Tablet Magazine’s food columnist and the author of ten cookbooks including the new Quiches, Kugels and Couscous: My Search for Jewish Cooking in France. She is a regular contributor to The New York Times and Food Arts Magazine, among other publications. She lives in Washington, D.C., and Martha’s Vineyard.
Alana Newhouse, editor-in-chief
Alana joined Nextbook in September 2008 and oversaw its redesign and relaunch as Tablet Magazine. Before that, she spent five years as culture editor of the Forward, where she supervised coverage of books, films, dance, music, art, and ideas. She also started a line of Forward-branded books with W.W. Norton and edited its maiden publication, A Living Lens: Photographs of Jewish Life from the Pages of the Forward. A graduate of Barnard College and Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism, Alana has contributed to The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and Slate.
Mark Oppenheimer, editor at large
Mark writes the monthly Beliefs column for The New York Times and is the author of three books, including Thirteen and a Day, about crashing bar and bat mitzvahs nationwide, and Wisenheimer, his memoir of surviving years of high school debate. He has a wife, two dogs, and as many daughters as Rush Limbaugh has had wives.
Eddy Portnoy a contributing editor for Tablet Magazine, teaches Yiddish language and literature at Rutgers University. He is the Academic Advisor at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.
Yair Rosenberg, senior writer
Yair covers the intersection of politics, culture, and religion for Tablet. His work on these and other subjects has also appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, The Atlantic, and the Jewish Review of Books, among others, but he does his best work on Twitter. He also serves as the editor of “Israel’s Documented Story,” the English-language blog of Israel’s National Archives. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Jewish studies and history from Harvard University.
David Samuels, literary editor
David, Tablet Magazine’s literary editor, is a contributing editor at Harper’s and a regular contributor to The Atlantic and The New Yorker. He is the author of two books, The Runner and Only Love Can Break Your Heart, a collection of his journalism.
Gabriel Sanders, director of business development
Gabriel, one of Tablet’s founding editors, today oversees advertising and fundraising for the magazine. From 2011 through 2015 he directed the public programs department at New York’s Museum of Jewish Heritage. His writing and reviews have appeared in the Forward, Bookforum, Time Out New York, The New York Times Book Review, and other outlets. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and master’s in European history from the University of Chicago.
Esther Werdiger, art director
Esther oversees art for Tablet. In her spare time, she writes, illustrates, podcasts, and makes comics. Her work has also appeared at The Awl, The Hairpin, Saveur, and Lilith.
Jonathan Zalman, staff editor
Jonathan runs The Scroll, Tablet’s news blog. He is a regular contributor to The Wall Street Journal’s sports page, where he covers chess, and currently teaches journalism and media courses at Fordham University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in communication and rhetoric studies at Syracuse University, and a master’s from NYU’s media, culture, and communication department.
