Public transport for Australia Day 2017

This year the Australia Day public holiday falls on Thursday, 26 January 2017.

Public transport services will operate to a public holiday timetable; however, some services may be altered or will not run.

Please plan your journey using Journey Planner or view timetables for your specific line or route before you travel.

Australian Open

Due to road closures within the CBD until 1pm, customers attending the Australian Open tennis can catch the Route 70 or 70a tram from Flinders Street/Russell Street (Stop 6) or walk 8 minutes from Flinders Street Station via the Australian Open Festival site in Birrarung Marr and Tanderrum Way to the tournament precinct. Customers can also take a train to Richmond Station and then walk 5 minutes to the tournament precinct. CBD diversions

Due to the Flag Raising Ceremony at Melbourne Town Hall and the Australia Day Parade along Swanston Street, there will be disruptions to tram services from 8.15am - 1pm, please see individual route information below.

Route 1:  8.30am - 1pm, Route 1 trams will operate as Route 1a in two sections:

  • Between East Coburg and Swanston Street/Melbourne Central Station (Stop 8); and
  • Between a temporary stop in Southbank Boulevard near the Arts Precinct and South Melbourne

Route 3: 8.30am - 1pm, Route 3 trams will operate as Route 3a between East Malvern and Flinders Lane/Market Street diverting via Kings Way and Queens Bridge Street along Route 55. 

Route 5: 8.30am - 1pm, Route 5 trams will operate as Route 5a between Malvern and a temporary stop in Southbank Boulevard, diverting via Kings Way and Sturt Street along Routes 55 and 1. 

Route 6: 8.30am - 1pm, Route 6 trams will operate as Route 6a between Glen Iris and a temporary stop in Southbank Boulevard, diverting via Kings Way and Sturt Street along Routes 55 and 1. 

Route 8: 8.30am - 1pm, Route 8 trams will operate as Route 8a in two sections:

  • Between Moreland and Swanston Street/Melbourne Central Station (Stop 8); and
  • Between Toorak and Flinders Lane/Market Street, diverting via Kings Way and Queens Bridge Street via Route 55. 

Route 11: 8.15am - 12.45pm, Route 11 trams will operate as Route 11a in two sections: 

  • Between West Preston and 101 Collins Street (Stop 7); and
  • Between Collins Street/Elizabeth Street (Stop 5) and Victoria Harbour Docklands

Route 12: 8.15am - 12.45pm, Route 12 trams will operate as Route 12a, diverting via La Trobe Street between St Vincent's Plaza and Southern Cross Station.

Route 16: 8.30am - 1pm, Route 16 trams will operate as Route 16a between Kew and a temporary stop in Southbank Boulevard, diverting via Kings Way and Sturt Street along Routes 55 and 1. 

Route 35 (City Circle trams): Midday - 1pm, City Circle trams will operate along a shortened route between Waterfront Docklands and Flinders Street/Elizabeth Street via Harbour Esplanade and Flinders Street (Stop 4). No trams will run along La Trobe Street or Spring Street.

Route 48: 8.15am - 12.45pm, Route 48 trams will operate as Route 48a in two sections:

  • Between North Balwyn and 101 Collins Street (Stop 7); and
  • Between Collins Street/Elizabeth Street (Stop 5) and Victoria Harbour Docklands

Route 64: 8.30am - 1pm, Route 64 trams will operate as Route 64a between East Brighton and Flinders Lane/Market Street diverting via Kings Way and Queens Bridge Street along Route 55. 

Route 67: 8.30am - 1pm, Route 67 trams will operate as Route 67a between Carnegie and Flinders Lane/Market Street diverting via Kings Way and Queens Bridge Street along Route 55. 

Route 70: 10.30am - 1pm, Route 70 trams will operate as Route 70a in two sections:

  • Between Wattle Park and Flinders Street/Russell Street (Stop 6); and
  • Between Flinders Street/Elizabeth Street (Stop 4) and Waterfront City Docklands

Route 72: 8.30am - 1pm, ROute 72 trams will operate as Route 72a between Camberwell and a temporary stop in Southbank Boulevard, diverting via Kings Way and Sturt Street along Routes 55 and 1. 

Route 75: 10.30am - 1pm, Route 75 trams will operate as Route 75a in two sections:

  • Between Vermont South and Flinders Street/Russell Street (Stop 6); and
  • Between Flinders Street/Elizabeth Street (Stop 4) and Etihad Stadium Docklands

Route 86: 9.30am - 12.30pm, Route 86 trams will operate as Route 86a, diverting via La Trobe Street between Spencer Street and Victoria Parade.

Route 96: 9.30am - 12.30pm, Route 96 trams will operate as Route 96a, diverting via La Trobe Street between Spencer Street and Victoria Parade.

Route 109: 8.15am - 12.45pm, Route 109 trams will operate as Route 109a, diverting via La Trobe Street between St Vincent's Plaza and Southern Cross Station.

Docklands services

Due to the Australia Day fireworks and street celebrations in Docklands, tram routes along Flinders Street and Harbour Esplanade will be affected from 4.30pm until 11.30pm.

Routes 35 (City Circle trams): 4.30pm - 11.30pm, City Circle trams will not service the following stops:

  • Harbour Esplanade/Bourke Street (Stop D3)
  • Harbour Esplanade/Docklands Park (Stop D4)
  • Wurundjeri Way/South Wharf (Stop D5)

Route 70: 4.30pm - 11.30pm, Route 70 trams will operate as Route 70a between Wattle Park and Flinders Street/Flinders Street West (Stop D6).

Route 75: 4.30pm - 11.30pm, Route 75 trams will operate as Route 75a between Vermont South and Flinders Street/Flinders Street West (Stop D6).

Route 86: 4.30pm - 11.30pm, additional trams will operate along Route 86 between Swanston Street/Russell Street (Stop 7) and Waterfront City Docklands.

Night Network services will not be running on Australia Day.

Route 605: The 10.15am and 11.40am city bound services from Greenvale will be diverting via Exhibition Street, Latrobe Street, Queen Street, Lonsdale Street, and be unable to service the stop outside Flinders Street Station on Flinders Street. Outbound services will run as normal. Customers wanting to board the 10.15am and 11.40am city bound services can use the stop at the corner of Flinders Lane and Queens Street, or consider trams or trains.

Tourist Shuttle Bus: Services will be diverting via St Kilda Road instead of Linlithgow Avenue. Buses will not be stopping at the Arts Centre (Stop 1) and the Shrine of Remembrance (Stop 13) all day, and at St Paul’s Cathedral from 1.30pm.

Night Coach: Night coach services will not be operating.

Melbourne to Adelaide: There will be no Overland service on Australia Day. The regular Saturday service from Melbourne to Adelaide will not operate.

Bairnsdale to Canberra: 

  • The Bairnsdale to Canberra service will operate to a Saturday timetable. It will depart 5 minutes earlier than a normal Thursday service.
  • There will not be a Canberra to Bairnsdale service on Australia Day.

Melbourne to Mildura:

  • The 9.25pm Melbourne to Mildura service will operate to a Thursday timetable.
  • The 9.50pm Mildura to Melbourne service will operate to a Thursday timetable.

Melbourne to Lancefield: Services between Sunbury and Lancefield will not operate. 

Genoa to Mallacoota: Services will operate to a holiday timetable.
