A star is born: Emma Stone's Golden Globes gown launches major trend for 2017

As far as red carpet trends go, this month's Golden Globes delivered on several fronts.

Pink cemented its place as the colour of the year, thanks to blushing gowns on Lily Collins in Zuhair Murad, Clare Foy in shimmering Erdem, and Zoe Saldana and Felicity Jones in Gucci.

Metallics, especially silver, also got top billing, courtesy of the stunningly original Louis Vuitton dress worn by Ruth Negga, among others.

But for me, the dress that made the greatest style impact was Emma Stone's Valentino gown – not only because La La Land won so many awards, but because the star motif all over it is going to be everywhere this season.

Last year saw both the passing of the Starman himself, David Bowie, and the return of a more rock-inspired aesthetic – both factors that may have led to this outpouring of five-pointed creativity.

As far as prints go, the humble celestial is both sophisticated and playful, looks great large or small, and on a variety of garments, from jackets to shoes.

Try saying that about spots or stripes and it's easy to see why the star is the most versatile of the three.

Who's doing it ... and how to rock it

It doesn't take a space engineer to work out why Stone's dress made best-dressed lists worldwide. There was the pale blush hue, the Goldilocks spread of stars down the gown that kept the eye where it is meant to focus (that is, on her torso) and the criss-cross back that looked perfect on Stone's alabaster skin.

And let it be said that despite wearing a gown of such emoji-worthy proportions, Stone still managed to give a killer response when asked the inevitable question about her gown from E! News reporter Ryan Seacrest.

"It's pink, and there are stars on it," she said.

But maybe what Stone didn't realise when she gave that straight-faced response is that designers from Christian Dior to Elie Saab and Saint Laurent have already queued a galaxy of stars in their Spring 2017 playlists.

At a more casual level, Jeff Abrams, founder of the LA-based label Rails said stars are "easily worn as a casual day outfit or transitioned into an eye-catching evening look".

On the street, stars made several appearances at Milan Fashion Week, including multiple prints in the one outfit.

Like stripes, be brave and experiment with different colours and styles to make your own Milky Way. The only style tip I would offer though, is to stick to stars on accessories or your outfit – not both.

Where to get the look

While the weather is still warm, jump online to retailers such as Boohoo for an affordable playsuit or T-shirt you can rock at a music festival, or start thinking about an autumn investment piece, such as a blazer or pair of jeans.

One designer who has fully embraced the star theme is Johnny Schembri, of by johnny., whose autumn collection was inspired by stars and stripes from a recent trip he made to the US.

And if you are a fan of collaborations, the range Gigi Hadid designed with Tommy Hilfiger features a few star-spangled pieces.

Or, of course, you could go all out and pick yourself up a Valentino. While Emma Stone's dress was custom made, you can buy a starry velvet dress from the latest collection but it will set you back about $5000. And that's at 50 per cent off.
