Bus driver charged over crash on M1 motorway that killed elderly woman

A minibus driver has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death after one of his elderly passengers died and a seven were injured in a crash on a motorway south of Wollongong.

The 63-year-old man will face Wollongong Local Court next month following the crash on the M1 Princes Motorway at Yallah just before midday on Wednesday.

Fatal bus crash near Wollongong

One person has died and several others were critically injured after a minibus overturned on a motorway near Wollongong. Vision courtesy Seven News.

The minibus, registered to the Warrigal Care aged-care facility, was transporting senior citizens to a barbecue lunch in nearby Dapto when it was involved in a collision with a B-double truck on the motorway's north-bound lanes.

The minibus came to rest on its side, with its roof severely damaged.

An 88-year-old woman died at the scene.

Seven other passengers on the minibus were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to hospital.

One of those passengers was flown to a Sydney hospital in a critical condition.

Both drivers were taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing, police said.

The motorway was closed to northbound traffic for several hours as officers from the Crash Investigation Unit examined the crash scene.

"Following inquiries, the driver of the minibus, a 63-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and his licence has been suspended," police said.

He was granted bail by police and is due to face court on Februrary 1.
