Bukit Batok, Bukit Panjang (District 23)

Marked by its lush greenery and abundance of private housing estates, District 23 that encompasses Bukit Batok and Bukit Panjang appeals very much to visitors and its residents for it is tucked away from the busy city centre without being completely inaccessible to other parts of the island.  A significant number of developments have sprung up within this district over the years, each acquiring its very own unique theme that seek to appeal to different buyers. District 23 also houses some of Singapore’s reputable schools like Raffles Girls’ Primary, Nanyang Primary, Hwa Chong Institution, Nanyang Girls’ High, National Junior College, Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the Singapore Institute of Management to name a few, making it a hotspot for families.

For nature lovers, a nature trail stretching from Bukit Gombak stadium to Chu Lin Road is constructed along with the Hillview Mansion where one can have a picturesque view of the surrounding lush greenery.

The humble beginnings of Bukit Panjang that means “long hill”, can be dated back to the 1990s as a small town formerly known as Zheng Hua. The Bukit Timah Hill is located in the area and is Singapore’s very first nature reserve that conserves many different species of plants, monkeys and snakes. Several HDB estates, condominiums and land properties can be found within Bukit Panjang. Popular condominiums include The Linear, Dairy Farm Estate and Espa.

Bukit Batok, on the other hand, was believed to have derived its name from the word “Batok” which translates “skull top” in Malay which was resembled by the portray of the hills. Not known to many, Bukit Batok houses the former Ford factory where the British surrendered to the Japanese, marking the beginnings of the Second World War in Singapore. Today, Bukit Batok is a vibrant residential area accompanied by a selection of leisure places including the West Mall, Bukit Batok Swimming Complex and the Bukit Batok Country Club. Several parks have also been developed around the region to promote a healthy lifestyle for nearby residents. The area is also highly accessible as it is linked to the Pan-Island Expressway, Toh Tuck Road, Upper Bukit Timah and the Bukit Batok Roads.
