Artist: Sue Wickison. The native habitat of this species is tropical rainforest near Atherton in north-east Queensland, which has been almost completely cleared for agriculture. It survives in a few remnant patches of rainforest, including some small national parks, and grows on basalt-derived soils at an altitude of 700–820 metres above sea level. It is much sought after as a horticultural subject, and cultivated plants probably outnumber those remaining in the wild. In 1997, Alloxylon flammeum was listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species.
