Launched in 2008, Melbourne’s The Little Veggie Patch Co (LVPC) is dedicated to helping people grow food, regardless of their skills or space available. It started by installing raised garden beds and larger edible gardens in people’s homes. These installations have moved towards a style of smaller space gardening, taking on the ideas of permaculture and adapting them to the constraints of space and time. Quickly, the raised garden beds became recycled apple crates and LVPC’s veggie crates have become its signature.
In 2009 LVPC released its first range of heirloom seeds, starting with four varieties of LVPC’s vegetable soulmate: the tomato. The ever-expanding range now has more than 40 varieties. The year after, LVPC released its first book, How to Grow Food in Small Spaces, which has become the bestselling gardening book in Australia. Along with the book release, LVPC opened a retail space in St Kilda East, which comprises a nursery, gift shop and LVPC home base. The Federation Square Pop Up Patch (PUP) opened in 2012 on a car park rooftop and ran until December 2016. An edible gardening club, it gave residents and businesses the opportunity to grow produce in an urban environment. PUP was a finalist in the 2014, 2015 and 2016 City of Melbourne Awards (for Contribution of a Business/Corporation to the Community & Sustainability).
