The Australian Press Council was established in 1976 and is responsible for promoting good standards of media practice, community access to information of public interest, and freedom of expression through the media.

The Press Council is also the principal body with responsibility for responding to complaints about Australian newspapers, magazines and associated digital outlets.

Press Freedom Medal  
The Press Council is calling for nominations for its Press Freedom Medal, to be awarded to an individual who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment or service to the cause of press freedom.  Details here.

Prizes for Journalism Students
The Press Council, in association with the Journalism Education and Research Association of Australia, has awarded the first of its new prizes for excellence in journalism studies. Details here.

Adjudications
Latest adjudications concern a complaint by the Australian Defence Force about material published in The Australian and an article in the Fremantle Herald about the brutal murder of a young man.
