Queensland’s highest wedding proposal spot

Seventy-seven floors up from Gold Coast’s Q1 resides the recently-turned-five SkyPoint Climb- a ninety minute adventure that sees both locals and tourists alike conquer fears, find love, and view the coast from a brand new perspective.

MyBT spoke to SkyPoint GC climb leader Lisa Allington about her experiences as a Climb Team Leader.

Q. How did you become a Climb Leader, and have you always loved heights?

A. I was already employed at SkyPoint as part of the guest services team and I knew from the day I started, I wanted to be a SkyPoint Climb Leader, although I wasn’t sure until I first did the climb if I feared heights or not. Lucky for me, I wasn’t!

Q. Are most the people that to the venture SkyPoint Climb tourists, or do you get a lot of local Gold Coast residents that do the climb?

A. We get both a mixture of tourists and locals. It’s great for the locals to see their beautiful city from a whole new perspective.

Q. What is the general reaction when people start the climb and see what they’ve gotten themselves into?

A. Many people are a bit apprehensive to begin with, followed by a big “Wow” when they get up to the SkyPoint Observation Deck level to begin their climb.

Q. How does their mentality shift once they’ve finished the climb?

A. Our guests are exhilarated once they have completed the SkyPoint Climb. Those who are scared of heights feel such a sense of accomplishment, and rightly so.

Q. Are there any horror stories of people that have gone on climbs, something like throwing up, or screaming a lot?

A. There are no real horror stories. If people are scared, they are usually pretty quiet, although I have seen a few tears.

Q. SkyPoint Climb recently celebrated a five-year milestone, are there any big plans for development in the future?

A. We are always asking people for any great suggestions they have for the climb experience and some of them could one day eventuate into a new adventure.

Q. Is there anything else you would like to add?

A. My favourite part of the job, is helping people to propose. The SkyPoint Climb is such a unique location to pop the big question and love really is in the air when it happens. It’s great when the girl has no idea what’s about to happen and we can make it such a special moment for them.
