A Sunshine Coast man has been charged with serious animal cruelty for allegedly drowning a thoroughbred foal.

The 56-year-old was charged with serious animal cruelty, breach of duty of care and wilful damage offences on Tuesday following a joint investigation between Queensland Racing and Queensland police.

Queensland Racing Integrity Commission Commissioner Ross Barnett said animal cruelty would not be tolerated within the racing industry.

"The welfare of racing animals is of the utmost importance and those who perform acts of cruelty to animals are on notice," he said.

The Yandina man is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on February 22.

Serious animal cruelty carries a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment.
