The combination of heat waves, another parliamentary expense scandal and back-to-work blues is enough to send you running for the hills… or a private island.

So it’s not surprising that a secluded island paradise is proving popular on accommodation website Airbnb.

For $US495 ($652) a night, you and three of your mates can stay on the tiny private island off the coast of Belize.

Bird Island is a 20-minute boat ride away from the village of Placencia (included in the cost), where you can fish, snorkel, kayak and get away from it all.

News has spread fast, however, and the island is fully booked until June 2018, according to the listing.

“It is amazing how long one can stare into crystal waters or starry sky,” one visitor said in a review.

“Bird Island is a slice of heaven away from the crowd and crazy hecticness (sic) of everyday life,” another wrote.

Sigh… if only.

Rest assured, there are options closer to home – much closer, in fact, although they don’t come with all the attractions of the Carribbean.

Picnic Island, off the east coast of Tasmania, sleeps 10 and comes with an Artist in Residence. It’s advertised at $880 a night.

And there’s Elizabeth Island, off French Island in Victoria, which is available for $551 a night.
