Canberra's East Hotel rated one of the best in Australia by TripAdvisor

Canberra now boasts one of the best hotels in the country according to a mammoth nationwide survey.

The East Hotel in Kingston was ranked sixth in TripAdvisor's Travellers Choice awards, based on the strength of visitor reviews given in the past year.

East Hotel general manager Todd Handy said he was "chuffed" to hear the hotel had made the top 10 after it was ranked 18th in the same list last year.

"We are very excited about it. It's fantastic news," he said.

"We keep a very close eye on our customer reviews. It's very important to us what they have to say and what they tell their friends about."

Charging on average $194 a night, it was also one of the cheapest hotels to make the top 10.

"It's incredible to be ranked so high. Especially when you look the company we are in," said Mr Handy.

Other than a good location, tasty food and extremely dedicated staff, he said there was really no secret to running a successful hotel.

"The most important thing here has to be our team," said Mr Handy.

"And I'm talking about everyone from our front-of-house staff through to our housekeeping as well."

The Pinetrees Lodge on Lord Howe Island took first place ($929 per night on average), followed by Ovolo Woolloomooloo in New South Wales ($368 per night) and the Park Hyatt Sydney ($951 per night).

Hamilton Island's Qualia Resort was the most expensive in fourth place ($1143 per night) while Victoria's Big4 Beacon Resort was the cheapest in 10th ($143 per night).

In reviews posted to travel booking site TripAdvisor, the East Hotel was praised for its convenient Canberra Avenue location, its level of service and the quality of its food.

"Spent a two-night weekend break here with my sister who lives in Australia. I must say it was perfect," gushed one guest.

"A great room, lovely linen and towels. Everything you needed if you wanted to dine in. But why would you with Joe's Bar and Muse restaurant just downstairs."
