More poetry for you to relax to, as I read and discuss two poems by British writer Philip Larkin (1922-1985) - 'Toads' and 'The Whitsun Weddings'. The second poem is a particular favourite of mine. I've tried to read them quite slowly, not only to be more relaxing but also so you can get the full meaning.

In March 1993 Terry Eagleton took on the late Philip Larkin and found him to be a "death-obsessed, emotionally-retarded misanthropist who had the impudence to generalise his own fears and failings to the way things are". Eagleton challenged Larkin's reputation as a poet, stating that he was sexist, racist, put an end to modernist experiment and set poetry back decades.
Uploader's note: this is the third Larkin video I've shared and the first which is critical of the poet. It's also the first of my videos on which commenting is disabled. My own opinion of Larkin is that he was a remarkable writer and a less than admirable human being. I feel little inclination to take up cudgels on behalf of a man who has been in the ground for over 30 years and I have even less desire to defend his use of racist language in his correspondence, nor his views on the working class and women. I take the same view as Clive James: Larkin really did say terrrible things but he didn't say them in his poetry and ultimately that's all that matters. As for Eagleton, I think he's deeply misguided to suggest that Larkin was wrong to generalise his own fears to the universal: what else can an artist do? Indeed, as I tend towards the pessimistic in life, I find myself wondering if anybody who comes to anything other than the conclusion that being alive is a miserable affair can be really said to be paying much attention at all. As the horror writer Thomas Ligotti, himself an admirer of Larkin, asked in his remarkable book The Conspiracy Against The Human Race, "[h]ow much nonsense can we take in our lives? And is there any way we can escape it? No, there is not. We are doomed to all kinds of nonsense: the pain nonsense, the nightmare nonsense, the sweat and slave nonsense, and many other shapes and sizes of insufferable nonsense. It is brought to us on a plate, and we must eat it up or face the death nonsense." The problem with coming to this rather obvious conclusion is that a lot of people won't thank you for it. It seems to me that much of the criticism levelled at Larkin after the publication in 1992 of the Andrew Motion biography and the selected letters had much more to do with that than it ever did with his racism and misogyny. People will put up with a lot: what they don't like – especially those self-regarding monsters with sufficient ego to become literary critics – is to be reminded they're self-conscious nothings.
Life is first boredom, then fear. I don't want have to spend the time between those two unhappy bookmarks herdng a comment thread of angry Larkin fans vicariously shouting at Terry Eagleton through me. Comments are off. Enjoy the video.

The pictures of Coventry station, the first in 1952, the last in 2006.
"Men with number plates" - Coventry is a town that builds motor cars, which are driven by men to various garages around the country on "Trade Plates", temporary number plates to make the unregistered vehicle "street legal".
"hols" are holidays or vacations, usually an annual trip to the seaside: they usually went to Devon or Cornwall.
The poem is a rueful list of things that didn't happen to him, things that he wishes had happened to make his childhood more meaningful. All this happened before WW2 - he left Coventry when war broke out.
"Spoken to by an old hat" could be a reference to Joseph Smith, who translated the Book or Mormon, who talked to an old hat in childhood.
The "splendid family" must be a literary reference, something like Swallows and Amazons or maybe Waltons-like from the pioneering west, or an early movie. I can't place it exactly. His favourite writer at the time was D H Lawrence.
Larkin said "I had grown up to regard sexual recreation as a remote thing, like baccarat or clog-dancing, and nothing happened to alter this view"
I made this reading, edited it, found the pictures and created the slide show in a total of 48 minutes.
Some sound editing was necessary because several vehicles passed my window during the recording. There were also a couple of fluffs and some sibilance to be edited out, which is nothing uncommon. The point I'm making is that it's not a huge task to read poetry on YouTube. The quality is - what it is. More time and effort wouldn't necessarily make it any better.
Coming up England by a different line
For once, early in the cold new year,
We stopped, and, watching men with number plates
Sprint down the platform to familiar gates,
'Why, Coventry!' I exclaimed. 'I was born here.'
I leant far out, and squinnied for a sign
That this was still the town that had been 'mine'
So long, but found I wasn't even clear
Which side was which. From where those cycle-crates
Were standing, had we annually departed
For all those family hols? . . . A whistle went:
Things moved. I sat back, staring at my boots.
'Was that,' my friend smiled, 'where you "have your roots"?'
No, only where my childhood was unspent,
I wanted to retort, just where I started:
By now I've got the whole place clearly charted.
Our garden, first: where I did not invent
Blinding theologies of flowers and fruits,
And wasn't spoken to by an old hat.
And here we have that splendid family
I never ran to when I got depressed,
The boys all biceps and the girls all chest,
Their comic Ford, their farm where I could be
'Really myself'. I'll show you, come to that,
The bracken where I never trembling sat,
Determined to go through with it; where she
Lay back, and 'all became a burning mist'.
And, in those offices, my doggerel
Was not set up in blunt ten-point, nor read
By a distinguished cousin of the mayor,
Who didn't call and tell my father, "There
Before us, had we the gift to see ahead -"
'You look as though you wished the place in Hell,'
My friend said, 'judging from your face.' 'Oh well,
I suppose it's not the place's fault,' I said.
'Nothing, like something, happens anywhere.'

A decent documentary on Philip Larkin's life as the 'Hermit of Hull'. I apologise for the poor video quality, it's the only one I could find. I suppose that this being Larkin, the VHS bleakness fits.

In March 1981 Melvyn Bragg travelled to Hull to interview the poet, librarian and jazz critic Philip Larkin for a production of the South Bank Show. The programme was broadcast 30th May 1982.
Larkin declined to appear on camera, a decision which Bragg later referred to as "a bit mean of him." The programme was the cause of much anguish for the notoriously mopish and reclusive Larkin. In August of that year he wrote to his bibliographer B.C. Bloomfield to say that he had recorded a number of poems for the programme, before concluding "God help me." Larkin's colleague James Booth observed that the poet found the experience "difficult and intrusive."

Sally Myfanwy Amis (1954 -- 2000) was, putatively, the youngest child of Larkin's lifelong friend and fellow writer Kingsley Amis - but it's more complicated than that. If you're curious, then you can read more about it here:

Philip Larkin
Philip Arthur Larkin CH CBE FRSL (9 August 1922 – 2 December 1985) was an English poet, novelist and librarian. His first book of poetry, The North Ship, was published in 1945, followed by two novels, Jill (1946) and A Girl in Winter (1947), and he came to prominence in 1955 with the publication of his second collection of poems, The Less Deceived, followed by The Whitsun Weddings (1964) and High Windows (1974). He contributed to The Daily Telegraph as its jazz critic from 1961 to 1971, articles gathered in All What Jazz: A Record Diary 1961–71 (1985), and he edited The Oxford Book of Twentieth Century English Verse (1973). His many honours include the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry. He was offered, but declined, the position of Poet Laureate in 1984, following the death of John Betjeman.
After graduating from Oxford in 1943 with a first in English language and literature, Larkin became a librarian. It was during the thirty years he worked with distinction as university librarian at the Brynmor Jones Library at the University of Hull that he produced the greater part of his published work. His poems are marked by what Andrew Motion calls a very English, glum accuracy about emotions, places, and relationships, and what Donald Davie described as lowered sights and diminished expectations. Eric Homberger (echoing Randall Jarrell) called him "the saddest heart in the post-war supermarket"—Larkin himself said that deprivation for him was what daffodils were for Wordsworth. Influenced by W. H. Auden, W. B. Yeats, and Thomas Hardy, his poems are highly structured but flexible verse forms. They were described by Jean Hartley, the ex-wife of Larkin's publisher George Hartley (the Marvell Press), as a "piquant mixture of lyricism and discontent", though anthologist Keith Tuma writes that there is more to Larkin's work than its reputation for dour pessimism suggests.

More poetry for you to relax to, as I read and discuss two poems by British writer Philip Larkin (1922-1985) - 'Toads' and 'The Whitsun Weddings'. The second poem is a particular favourite of mine. Without Walls: J'accuse Philip Larkin
In March 1993 Terry Eagleton took on the late Philip Larkin and found him to be a "death-obsessed, emotionally-retarded misanthropist who had the impudence to generalise his own fears and failings to the way things are". Eagleton challenged Larkin's reputation as a poet, stating that he was sexist, racist, put an end to modernist experiment and set poetry back decades. Uploader's note: this is the third Larkin video I've shared and the first which is critical of the poet. It's also the first of my videos on which commenting is disabled. My own opinion of Larkin is that he was a remarkable writer and a less than admirable human being. I Remember, I Remember by Philip Larkin (read by Tom O'Bedlam)
The pictures of Coventry station, the first in 1952, the last in 2006. "Men with number plates" - Coventry is a town that builds motor cars, which are driven by men to various garages around the country on "Trade Plates", temporary number plates to make the unregistered vehicle "street legal". "hols" are holidays or vacations, usually an annual trip to the seaside: they usually went to Devon or Cornwall. The poem is a rueful list of things that didn't happen to him, things that he wishes had happened to make his childhood more meaningful. All this happened before WW2 - he left Coventry when war broke out. "Spoken to by an old hat" could be a reference to Joseph Smith, who translated the Book or Mormon, who talked to an old hat in childhood. The "splendid family" must be a literar... -

Philip Larkin: Love and Death in Hull (Channel 4) A decent documentary on Philip Larkin's life as the 'Hermit of Hull'. I apologise for the poor video quality, it's the only one I could find. I suppose that this being Larkin, the VHS bleakness fits. Home is so sad. It stays as it was left, Shaped to the comfort of the last to go As if to win them back. Instead, bereft Of anyone to please, it withers so, Having no heart to put aside the theft And turn again to what it started as, A joyous shot at how things ought to be, Long fallen wide. The South Bank Show: Philip Larkin
In March 1981 Melvyn Bragg travelled to Hull to interview the poet, librarian and jazz critic Philip Larkin for a production of the South Bank Show. The programme was broadcast 30th May 1982. Larkin declined to appear on camera, a decision which Bragg later referred to as "a bit mean of him." The programme was the cause of much anguish for the notoriously mopish and reclusive Larkin. In August of that year he wrote to his bibliographer B.C. Bloomfield to say that he had recorded a number of poems for the programme, before concluding "God help me." Larkin's colleague James Booth observed that the poet found the experience "difficult and intrusive." -

Sally Myfanwy Amis (1954 -- 2000) was, putatively, the youngest child of Larkin's lifelong friend and fellow writer Kingsley Amis - but it's more complicated than that. In March 1993 Terry Eagleton took on the late Philip Larkin and found him to be a "death-obsessed, emotionally-retarded misanthropist who had the impudence to generalise his own fears and failings to the way things are". Eagleton challenged Larkin's reputation as a poet, stating that he was sexist, racist, put an end to modernist experiment and set poetry back decades.

My own opinion of Larkin is that he was a remarkable writer and a less than admirable human being. I feel little inclination to take up cudgels on behalf of a man who has been in the ground for over 30 years and I have even less desire to defend his use of racist language in his correspondence, nor his views on the working class and women. I take the same view as Clive James: Larkin really did say terrrible things but he didn't say them in his poetry and ultimately that's all that matters. As for Eagleton, I think he's deeply misguided to suggest that Larkin was wrong to generalise his own fears to the universal: what else can an artist do? Indeed, as I tend towards the pessimistic in life, I find myself wondering if anybody who comes to anything other than the conclusion that being alive is a miserable affair can be really said to be paying much attention at all. As the horror writer Thomas Ligotti, himself an admirer of Larkin, asked in his remarkable book The Conspiracy Against The Human Race, "[h]ow much nonsense can we take in our lives? And is there any way we can escape it? No, there is not. We are doomed to all kinds of nonsense: the pain nonsense, the nightmare nonsense, the sweat and slave nonsense, and many other shapes and sizes of insufferable nonsense. It is brought to us on a plate, and we must eat it up or face the death nonsense." The problem with coming to this rather obvious conclusion is that a lot of people won't thank you for it. It seems to me that much of the criticism levelled at Larkin after the publication in 1992 of the Andrew Motion biography and the selected letters had much more to do with that than it ever did with his racism and misogyny. People will put up with a lot: what they don't like – especially those self-regarding monsters with sufficient ego to become literary critics – is to be reminded they're self-conscious nothings.
Life is first boredom, then fear. I don't want have to spend the time between those two unhappy bookmarks herdng a comment thread of angry Larkin fans vicariously shouting at Terry Eagleton through me. Comments are off. Enjoy the video.

"Men with number plates" - Coventry is a town that builds motor cars, which are driven by men to various garages around the country on "Trade Plates", temporary number plates to make the unregistered vehicle "street legal".

The "splendid family" must be a literary reference, something like Swallows and Amazons or maybe Waltons-like from the pioneering west, or an early movie. I can't place it exactly. His favourite writer at the time was D H Lawrence.
Larkin said "I had grown up to regard sexual recreation as a remote thing, like baccarat or clog-dancing, and nothing happened to alter this view"
I made this reading, edited it, found the pictures and created the slide show in a total of 48 minutes.
Some sound editing was necessary because several vehicles passed my window during the recording. There were also a couple of fluffs and some sibilance to be edited out, which is nothing uncommon. The point I'm making is that it's not a huge task to read poetry on YouTube. The quality is - what it is. More time and effort wouldn't necessarily make it any better.
Coming up England by a different line
For once, early in the cold new year,
We stopped, and, watching men with number plates
Sprint down the platform to familiar gates,
'Why, Coventry!' I exclaimed. 'I was born here.'
I leant far out, and squinnied for a sign
That this was still the town that had been 'mine'
So long, but found I wasn't even clear
Which side was which. From where those cycle-crates
Were standing, had we annually departed
For all those family hols? . . . A whistle went:
Things moved. I sat back, staring at my boots.
'Was that,' my friend smiled, 'where you "have your roots"?'
No, only where my childhood was unspent,
I wanted to retort, just where I started:
By now I've got the whole place clearly charted.
Our garden, first: where I did not invent
Blinding theologies of flowers and fruits,
And wasn't spoken to by an old hat.
And here we have that splendid family
I never ran to when I got depressed,
The boys all biceps and the girls all chest,
Their comic Ford, their farm where I could be
'Really myself'. I'll show you, come to that,
The bracken where I never trembling sat,
Determined to go through with it; where she
Lay back, and 'all became a burning mist'.
And, in those offices, my doggerel
Was not set up in blunt ten-point, nor read
By a distinguished cousin of the mayor,
Who didn't call and tell my father, "There
Before us, had we the gift to see ahead -"
'You look as though you wished the place in Hell,'
My friend said, 'judging from your face.' 'Oh well,
I suppose it's not the place's fault,' I said.
'Nothing, like something, happens anywhere.'

Larkin declined to appear on camera, a decision which Bragg later referred to as "a bit mean of him." The programme was the cause of much anguish for the notoriously mopish and reclusive Larkin. In August of that year he wrote to his bibliographer B.C. Bloomfield to say that he had recorded a number of poems for the programme, before concluding "God help me." Larkin's colleague James Booth observed that the poet found the experience "difficult and intrusive."
