The Cutting Edge

The Cutting Edge is a 1992 romantic comedy film directed by Paul Michael Glaser and written by Tony Gilroy. The plot is about a very rich, spoiled figure skater (played by Moira Kelly) who is paired with a has-been ice hockey player (played by D. B. Sweeney) for Olympic figure skating. Competing at the 1992 Winter Olympics, they have a climatic face off against a Soviet pair. The film was primarily shot in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Plot

Kate Moseley is a world-class figure skater representing the United States in the pairs event at the 1988 Winter Olympics. She has genuine talent, but years of being spoiled by her wealthy father Jack have made her all but impossible to work with.

Doug Dorsey is captain of the U.S. ice hockey team at the same Winter Olympics. Just minutes before a game, he and Kate literally run into each other at the arena. During the game Doug suffers an eye injury which damages his peripheral vision, and he is forced to retire. Later in the Games, Kate's partner drops her during their program, costing them a chance at the gold medal.

Robert W. Cort

Robert W. Cort is an American film producer. Since 1985 he has produced forty-eight feature films which have grossed over 2.5 billion dollars in worldwide box office. These include Three Men and a Baby, Cocktail, Jumanji, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise,The Cutting Edge,Against the Ropes,Runaway Bride, and Save the Last Dance.

Cort also produced Mr. Holland's Opus and currently serves on the board of directors for The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation

Cort’s HBO film, Something the Lord Made, won three Emmy Awards, including the 2004 Outstanding Film Made for Television. The film also won the American Film Institute Award, the Director's and Writer's Guild Awards, the Christopher, NAACP Image Award and the prestigious Peabody Award.

His other television films have also won multiple honors, including the 1990 Emmy for Outstanding Children's Program for A Mother's Courage: The Mary Thomas Story.

His most recent production, the family drama Im Winter ein Jahr (English Title: A Year Ago in Winter), won the Silver Lola for Best Picture at the 2009 German Academy Awards.

Moira Kelly

Moira Kelly (born March 6, 1968) is an American actress. She is best known for the role of Kate Moseley in the 1992 film The Cutting Edge, as well as single mother Karen Roe on the teen drama One Tree Hill, Dorothy Day in Entertaining Angels: The Dorothy Day Story, White House media consultant Mandy Hampton in the first season of The West Wing, and the voice of Simba's love interest Nala in The Lion King and its sequel The Lion King II: Simba's Pride. She also played Hetty Kelly and Oona O´Neill in Chaplin (1992).

Early life

Kelly was born in Queens, New York, a daughter of Irish immigrants. Her father, Peter, was trained as a concert violinist, and her mother, Anne, is a nurse. Kelly is the third of six children and was raised in Ronkonkoma. She was brought up as a Catholic. Kelly attended Connetquot Senior High School in Bohemia, Long Island, graduating in the class of 1986. Later, she attended Marymount Manhattan College.

In her youth, Kelly was cast in a small role in her high school's 1984 production of Annie. Due to illness, the girl playing Miss Hannigan was replaced, causing a series of cast changes leading to her choice of career. A faithful Catholic, Kelly had to decide between acting and her childhood ambition of becoming a nun.

D. B. Sweeney

Daniel Bernard "D. B." Sweeney (born November 14, 1961) is an American actor.

Early life

Sweeney was born and raised in Shoreham, New York, by an educator father and a municipal government employee mother. He attended Shoreham-Wading River High School and both Tulane and New York University. Before completing his B.F.A. at NYU in 1984, he starred in the Broadway revival of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial.

Career

Sweeney guest starred on the television series like The Edge of Night and Spenser: For Hire. On films, he played a gung-ho Vietnam enlistee in Francis Ford Coppola's Gardens of Stone (1987) and Travis Walton in Fire in the Sky (1993). He also played Doug Dorsey in The Cutting Edge (1992), Shoeless Joe Jackson in Eight Men Out (1988) and Dish Boggett in Lonesome Dove (1989).

After voicing Iguanodon Aladar in the Disney CGI animated film Dinosaur, Sweeney starred in Life as We Know It as Michael Whitman (2004–2005) and C-16: FBI produced by Michael Robin.

Sweeney guest-starred on various television series, including House (2006) as Crandall, an ex-bandmate of Dr. Gregory House; Jericho as John Goetz (2006–2008); Castle as a Los Angeles detective (2011), and more. He also had recurring roles as U.S. Marshal Sam Kassmeyer, assigned to protect Haley and Jack Hotchner on Criminal Minds (2009); as Peter Emory in season 1 of Crash (2008); and as Carter in The Event (2010).
