Samuel Cook (January 22, 1931 – December 11, 1964), known professionally as Sam Cooke, was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur.
Influential as both a singer and composer, he is commonly known as the King of Soul for his distinctive vocals and importance within popular music. His pioneering contributions to soul music contributed to the rise of Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Billy Preston, and popularized the likes of Otis Redding and James Brown.AllMusic biographer Bruce Eder wrote that Cooke was "the inventor of soul music", and possessed "an incredible natural singing voice and a smooth, effortless delivery that has never been surpassed".
Cooke had 30 U.S. top 40 hits between 1957 and 1964, plus three more posthumously. Major hits like "You Send Me", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Cupid", "Chain Gang", "Wonderful World", and "Twistin' the Night Away" are some of his most popular songs. Cooke was also among the first modern black performers and composers to attend to the business side of his musical career. He founded both a record label and a publishing company as an extension of his careers as a singer and composer. He also took an active part in the civil rights movement.
In classical mythology, Cupid (Latin Cupido, meaning "desire") is the god of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection. He is often portrayed as the son of the love goddess Venus and the war god Mars, and is known in Latin also as Amor ("Love"). His Greek counterpart is Eros.
Although Eros appears in Classical Greek art as a slender winged youth, during the Hellenistic period, he was increasingly portrayed as a chubby boy. During this time, his iconography acquired the bow and arrow that represent his source of power: a person, or even a deity, who is shot by Cupid's arrow is filled with uncontrollable desire. In myths, Cupid is a minor character who serves mostly to set the plot in motion. He is a main character only in the tale of Cupid and Psyche, when wounded by his own weapons he experiences the ordeal of love. Although other extended stories are not told about him, his tradition is rich in poetic themes and visual scenarios, such as "Love conquers all" and the retaliatory punishment or torture of Cupid.
One of the most famous songs of Sam Cooke, the "father of soul". Cupid draw back your bow And let your arrow go Straight to my lover's heart for me Cupid please hear my cry And let your arrow fly Straight to my lover's heart for me Now I don't mean to bother you But I'm in distress There's danger of me losing all of my happiness For I love a girl who doesn't know I exist And this you can fix So... Cupid draw back your bow And let your arrow go Straight to my lover's heart for me Cupid please hear my cry And let your arrow fly Straight to my lover's heart for me Cupid with your arrow make her love strong for me I promise I wll love her until eternity I know between the two of us her heart we can steal help me if you will So... Sam Cooke is one of the greatest Soul singers that ever lived. His songs touched millions of people and they are still being played on all radio stations over the world. My favourite song by him is Wonderful World followed by this one. He died much too young, his songs had so much feeling in them and I love that he had his own style. Cupid is a much loved song! xx

White leather interiors and aqua exteriors up on the cliffs above the ocean, it's a convertible and that's even okay, 'Danny Boy' is playing now and that's even okay cause Sam Cooke is singing it. Sam Cooke - Bring It On Home To Me
From the album "One Night Stand" Enjoy.
Sam Cooke was quite simply put, "The Man Who Invented Soul". His voice, phrasing and style would go on to influence a generation of singers in the genres of rock, pop and soul. His influence is evident when listening to artists/fans from the likes of Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding to Rod Stewart, Terence Trent D'arby and Guy Sebastian. This was an exquisite recording from Sam Cooke Live at the Copa performing a medley of songs, namely Try a Little Tenderness, (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons and You Send Me. I would also highly recommend listening to Sam's gospel music from the Soul Stirrers era. His first five gospel recordings define soul music as we know it today. Go out and get yourself "The Complete Recordings of Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers" from Amazon and cha...

Mary: I gotta change shoes. Mary: Okay, there we go. Now, that’s so much better. Stuart: Ladies and gentlemen, obviously, let’s begin at the beginning. Normally, the protocol is that we give people a round of applause at the end of the event. In this particular case, we’re going to break with all the protocols, because I know a lot of people that are in the audience, I’ve seen faces, I’ve seen people with reputations in the audience, and I think that all of us can say, unanimously that, Mary probably doesn’t really deeply understand how much impact her singing and her reputation has had in our lives, the way it’s shaped the love that we’ve got for the music. So, ladies and gentlemen, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, come on. [applause] Stuart: So, where to start? Let’s start with a quick q...
During the late 1960’s Jazz music was undergoing a major metamorphosis. Miles Davis was musically in transition and went from the traditional acoustic quartet to a more funky electronic sound. Out went the stand-up bass and came the electronic bass. Out with the standard piano and came the Fender Rhodes. Many musicians in what would be hailed as Fusion jazz phase, took rock, soul, and other free form elements and centered it with an electronic base. Musicians like Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Les McCann, Herbie Hancock, and Stevie Wonder used the Fender Rhodes as not a replacement to the standard piano, but as a means to create and experimental sound to evolve with the new music that took the world by storm. Pianist and keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith is a pioneer in the fusion jazz/funk whe...

Abstract What moves us to action? Through this sound scape project we will explore music’s influence on social movements/events in the U.S. and abroad during times of war and peace (ie. The Civil Rights Movement, Apartheid, Occupy Wall Street and Nigeria, The L.A. Riots, Arab Spring, and anti-war movement of the Vietnam War). Think about what movements in history have caused/pushed all people to act no matter their race, religion, age, and/or class? What did music do for these movements and for the people that sacrificed their lives for change? Descriptive Summary This is an exploration of music’s role in driving social movements. With Occupy Wall Street right next door to the students at The New School I wanted to understand why more people and myself in general had not gotten involve...
Upon applying to an internship position at Hootsuite, I was asked to summarize what makes me unique in less than 150 characters. Of course, with my long and decorated history of writing theme songs for social-tech companies, the natural response was to make the staff aware of how I could bring this creative talent to the Hootsuite team. After passing the first-round phone interview, I decided to make good on my promise and deliver a catchy little ditty. The result is this video. I can't take full credit for the song. The melody belongs to a personal favorite: Sam Cooke's 'Cupid.'
Organist Joey DeFrancesco performed music with his new quartet, The People, recently at the famed Birdland Jazz Club in New York City. Joey DeFrancesco & The People's upcoming Mack Avenue Records release "Project Freedom" features Joey on organ, keyboards, and trumpet, Jason Brown on drums, Troy Roberts on saxophones, and Dan Wilson on guitar. The group covers standards such as Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and James Weldon Johnson's "Lift Every Voice and Sing." In this special edition of The Pace Report, I had the honor of sitting down with Joey and members of The People to discuss the new CD, how they've meshed musically, and why Joey decided to switch from the traditional trio setting to a quartet. Joey DeFrancesco & The People's debut recording "Project Freedom" will be availa...
