Matadi, port city, extreme western Democratic Republic of the Congo. It lies along the Congo River opposite the town of Vivi. Matadi is situated 93 miles (150 km) upstream from the Atlantic port of Banana and is the farthest point up the river reached by oceangoing ships; cataracts prevent navigation farther upstream. It is the nation's principal port, with one of the largest harbours in central Africa and a mile-long waterfront that is cut in granite. Located at the base of the Cristal Mountains, the city takes its name from the Kikongo word for stone. In 1879 the British-American explorer Henry (later Sir Henry) Morton Stanley opened a trading station there. Between 1890 and 1908 the first Congo railroad was built from Matadi past the cataract region to Léopoldville (now Kinshasa), the national capital (210 miles [338 km] northeast). The Inga Falls, 25 miles (40 km) upstream, have been developed for hydroelectric power. Pop. (2004 est.) 245,862.

Matadi
Matadi is the chief sea port of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the capital of the Bas-Congo province. It has a population of 245,862 (2004). Matadi is situated on the left bank of the Congo River 148 km (92 mi) from the mouth and 8 km (5.0 mi) below the last navigable point before rapids make the river impassable for a long stretch upriver. It was founded by Sir Henry Morton Stanley in 1879.
History
Matadi was founded by Sir Henry Morton Stanley in 1879. It was strategically important because it was the last navigable port on the Congo River and therefore the furthest inland port in the Congo Free State. The construction of the Matadi–Kinshasa Railway (built between 1890 and 1898) made it possible to transport goods from deeper within Congo's interior to the port of Matadi and the city became an important trading center. Portuguese and French West-African commercial interests influenced the city's architecture and urban design which borrowed from the neighboring colonies in Angola and the Congo-Brazzaville.

Narendra Chanchal
Narendra Chanchal is an Indian singer who specialises in Punjabi bhentein.
Personal life
Narendra Chanchal was born to a religious Punjabi family in Namak Mandi, Amritsar. Durga, hence since childhood he grew up in religious atmosphere which inspired him to start singing bhajans and aartis. He took music lessons from Sri Prem Tikha, Amritsar.
Career
He tried to sing for Bollywood Movies but lost his voice, after regaining his voice back after couple of years Chanchal sang his first Bollywood song Beshak mandir masjid todo for Bobby. Chanchal won the 1973 Filmfare Best Male Playback Award for this song as well as a "Bobby Award". Later in life he was awarded the "Raj Kapoor Memorial Award." He was also made an honorary citizen of the US state of Georgia.
Narendra Chanchal has released the book Midnight Singer which narrates his life, struggles and hardships he had to face, to achieve what he has achieved today, what he thinks about Mata Rani and what is his dreams and aim yet to achieve. He comes to katra (Vaishno Devi) every year on 29 December and performs on the 31st night. He stays at Hotel Varun in Katra.

Matadi, port city, extreme western Democratic Republic of the Congo. It lies along the Congo River opposite the town of Vivi. Matadi is situated 93 miles (150 km) upstream from the Atlantic port of Banana and is the farthest point up the river reached by oceangoing ships; cataracts prevent navigation farther upstream. It is the nation's principal port, with one of the largest harbours in central Africa and a mile-long waterfront that is cut in granite. Located at the base of the Cristal Mountains, the city takes its name from the Kikongo word for stone. In 1879 the British-American explorer Henry (later Sir Henry) Morton Stanley opened a trading station there. Between 1890 and 1908 the first Congo railroad was built from Matadi past the cataract region to Léopoldville (now Kinshasa), the national capital (210 miles [338 km] northeast). The Inga Falls, 25 miles (40 km) upstream, have been developed for hydroelectric power. Pop. (2004 est.) 245,862. -
