A mum has taken to Facebook to warn other parents about Children's Nurofen after her daughter had an unexpected reaction to a dose of the popular pain medication.

Alicia Holder shared a photograph of the 5-12 years bottle, along with the message:

"Fellow parents, just a small warning about the children's nurofen. Bought this bottle brand new yesterday afternoon and gave Riley a dose. She instantly cried and grabbed at her throat."

Ms Holder added that she and two other adults tasted the medication and experienced a " spicy burning feeling at the backs of our throats".

According to Ms Holder, she's not the only parent to report a problem with the product. Another mum noted a similar issue with her 0-2 years bottle.

"I've contacted the manufacturer," Ms Holder continued, "who have asked me to return the bottle for testing!"

"Just wanted to warn others in case their kids react similarly!

"Might be worth a taste test!"

Ms Holder later updated her post to add the expiry date (4/2018) and batch number: (609765).
The post has been shared over 7,000 times as of Monday afternoon - other mothers reporting similar reactions with their own children.

"Omg this was happening to my son also," one commenter wrote.
"My 7 year said the same thing, and that was 3 months ago," added another.
"Yes it's bad every time we gave our kids it they spewed it back up," shared one mum.
Essential Kids has contacted the manufacturer, Reckitt Benckiser Group plc, for comment.
A formal recall has not yet been issued.
