2008 a French SUV odyssey.

As the compact SUV market becomes more and more popular Peugeot has updated its 2008 with hope of taking its sales into new, unexplored territory.

The new look crossover scores a new front that features a new front bumper, dual-grilles and oddly shaped headlights.

A humped-back roof line is paired with roof rails, while at the rear a floating roof falls down to a creased rear end with re-worked taillight design.

All these design cues fit into the quirky city SUV mantra where a big chunk of the 2008's competitors - such as the Mazda CX-3 and soon-to-drop Toyota C-HR - are typecast by a more aggressive, outside-the-box look.

One of the biggest changes to the 2008 is underneath with a turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine replacing the previous model's petrol and diesel offerings.

The new engine produces 81kW and an impressive 205Nm. Peugeot has also ditched its manual transmission, and now only offers a six-speed automatic transmission across the range.

Peugeot will offer a three-tier model lineup in Australia consisting of Active, Allure and GT-Line.

The base Active scores 16-inch alloy wheels, reversing camera, rear parking sensors, cruise control, leather steering wheel, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay which is accessible through a seven-inch screen.

While stepping up to the Allure will gain you an additional self-parking function, navigation, auto wipers, auto headlights, cornering fog lights, dual-zone air-conditioning, rear privacy glass, autonomous emergency braking and rides on 17-inch alloy wheels.

The range-topping GT-Line variant scores an array of styling cues including red highlights on the door handles, seats belts and handbrake, red contrast stitching on the premium leather steering wheel, alloy door sills and sports pedals, red LED instrument panel surround.

Outside the GT-Line is differentiated from the rest of the range with a specific rear bumper with a chrome exhaust, black highlights on the roof rails, rear door trim and spoiler and mirror shells, while the front grille surround sports red Peugeot lettering.

The new Peugeot 2008 range is set to go on sale locally late February with pricing to be revealed closer to the date.
