'Nobody helped': Gang attacks and robs teens in toilets at Highpoint

The mother of a boy who was violently attacked and had his phone stolen by a group of eight teens at Highpoint says nobody stepped in to help her son.

Jasmine Moey's son had just watched a movie at the Maribyrnong shopping centre when he and a friend went to the toilets on Friday, January 21 about 7.15pm.

Teens attacked in Highpoint robbery

Mother of a 14-year-old who was robbed of his phone at Highpoint shopping centre on Friday tells 3AW at least two adults were nearby when her son and a friend were attacked by as many as eight older teens.

Ms Moey told 3AW radio that once inside, the two 14-year-old boys were attacked by the eight teens.

Her son was bashed and robbed.

"He was punched in the left eye," she told 3AW Radio. "There was eight of them in the cubicle and they were attacking his friend as well in the other corner."

Before they took his phone the teens allegedly made her son unlock it and turn off the the feature that tracks iPhones.

At least two adult men were allegedly present in the cubicles at the time. "Nobody helped," Ms Moey said.

Police are investigating the robbery.

In a statement, police said two 14-year-old boys were approached near the toilets by a group of up to nine teenagers perceived to be of African appearance. "Both victims had their phones stolen and the one was punched, suffering bruising to his face."
