With the stroke of a pen, the US President Donald Trump has formally withdrawn the United States from the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal. Declaring it a 'great thing for the American worker', he has signed an executive order in the Oval Office, pulling the US out of the 12 nation trade deal, which includes Australia. President Trump has also met with business leaders, announced a federal government hiring freeze and issued another executive order preventing US foreign aid money being spent on abortion.

| UpdatedMore than 7000 people gathered at Federation Square for a vigil for the victims of last Friday's Bourke Street crash. The vigil took place just a short time after 26-year-old Dimitrious Gargasoulas was charged with the murders of five people in the car attack. Among those dead is three month-old Zachary Bryant and a Japanese national. At the vigil, Melbourne's leaders urged the city to remain united in the face of the tragedy.

Australia's film and television union says it will take a fresh look at safety for the entire industry, after a man was shot dead during filming a video clip in Brisbane yesterday. Actor Johann Ofner was shot in the chest during production for hip-hop band Bliss n Eso in a bar in the city's CBD. It is not known what type of ammunition killed the 28-year-old man, but film weaponry specialists say most firearms are dangerous and need expert guidance.

Police in Papua New Guinea have charged an asylum-seeker from Australia's offshore detention centre on Manus Island with sexually assaulting a local woman. The incident has outraged Manus residents and forced police to intervene to protect the accused from retaliation. The British government is being accused of covering up the failure of an unarmed ballistic missile launch. The Sunday Times is reporting that the missile veered off course during a test in June last year - weeks before the House of Commons approved an expensive renewal of the UK's aging nuclear missile system, Trident. The British Prime Minister Teresa May has refused to answer questions about whether or not she knew about the apparent error at the time the vote happened.

There are high hopes for new Syrian peace negotiations which are due to start in Kazakhstan's capital today. The meeting in Astana, which has been organised by Russia, Turkey and Iran, is expected to last several days. It comes as a ceasefire inside Syria, brokered by Moscow and Ankara, has mostly held for weeks.

Queensland appears to be following New South Wales' lead, and reconsidering controversial lockout laws for pubs and clubs. A 1am lockout was legislated to start next week, but there are reports Queensland's Cabinet will today dumping lockouts and instead make it compulsory for clubs to keep databases of patrons' identities, with a view to excluding trouble-makers. The New South Wales Government announced a trial to soften alcohol management laws in December.
