Mycenae, a hilltop fortress located on the Peloponnesian Peninsula SW of Athens was the hub of a mighty civilization that dominated the Greek world between 1600 and 1200 B.C., a thousand years before Athens' Golden Age. The Mycenaeans were as distant and mysterious to the Golden Age Greeks as Plato and Socrates are to us today. Mycenae lay unappreciated until the 19th century when a treasure trove of gold was unearthed in the necropolis. Today, those treasures, including the so-called "Mask of Agamemnon" are the star attractions in Athens' National Archaeological Museum. This discovery affirmed the archeologists' theory that Mycenae was Homer's fabled city "rich in gold." Mycenae is an archaeological site in Greece, located about 90 kilometres (56 miles) southwest of Athens, in the north-eastern Peloponnese. Argos is 11 kilometres (7 miles) to the south; Corinth, 48 kilometres (30 miles) to the north. From the hill on which the palace was located, one can see across the Argolid to the Saronic Gulf.
In the second millennium BC, Mycenae was one of the major centres of Greek civilisation, a military stronghold which dominated much of southern Greece. The period of Greek history from about 1600 BC to about 1100 BC is called Mycenaean in reference to Mycenae. At its peak in 1350 BC, the citadel and lower town had a population of 30,000 and an area of 32 hectares.
Although the citadel was built by Greeks, the name Mukanai is thought not to be Greek but rather one of the many pre-Greek place names inherited by the immigrant Greeks.
Legend has it that the name was connected to the Greek word mycēs (μύκης, "mushroom"). Thus, Pausanias ascribes the name to the legendary founder Perseus, who was said to have named it either after the cap of the sheath of his sword, or after a mushroom he had plucked on the site.
Οι Μυκήνες (Μυκήναι, Μυκήνη) ήταν αρχαία πόλη της Αργολίδας κοντά στο βουνό Τρητός κι απέναντι απ' τον Αργολικό κόλπο. Ο αρχαιολογικός χώρος των Μυκηνών βρίσκεται περίπου 90 χιλιόμετρα νοτιοδυτικά της Αθήνας, στη βορειοανατολική Πελοπόννησο.
Κατά τη δεύτερη χιλιετηρίδα προ Χριστού, οι Μυκήνες ήταν ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα κέντρα ελληνικού πολιτισμού, αποτελώντας ένα ισχυρό στρατιωτικό φρούριο που δέσποζε στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος της νότιας Ελλάδας. Η περίοδος της ελληνικής ιστορίας μεταξύ 1600 π.Χ. έως περίπου το 1100 π.Χ. ονομάζεται «μυκηναϊκή», αναφερόμενη στις Μυκήνες. Παρότι το οχυρό κτίστηκε από Έλληνες, η ονομασία «Μυκήνες» δεν θεωρείται ελληνική αλλά μάλλον αποτελεί προελληνικό τοπωνύμιο, το οποίο υιοθετήθηκε από τους επήλυδες Έλληνες. Σύμφωνα με τον Παυσανία, ο Περσέας έκτισε τις Μυκήνες στην Τίρυνθα και τους έδωσε αυτό το όνομα είτε διότι του έπεσε εκεί ο «μύκης» (θήκη) απ' το ξίφος του είτε ενώ διψούσε, βρήκε ένα μύκητα (δηλαδή ένα μανιτάρι) και τραβώντας τον είδε να υπάρχει η πηγή Περσεία, που υπάρχει και σήμερα.
Τούτο παρακίνησε τον Ερρίκο Σλήμαν να σκάψει την ακρόπολη των Μυκηνών, όπου βρήκε τους γνωστούς κάθετους λακκοειδείς τάφους, διάφορα αγγεία σπάνιας τέχνης, δείγματα Μυκηναϊκού πολιτισμού που αναπτύχθηκε με κέντρο τις Μυκήνες από τα 1600-1100 π.Χ. Το έργο του Σλήμαν συνέχισε από το 1888 ο Χρήστος Τσούντας, η συστηματική, σχεδόν επί εικοσαετία, σκαπάνη του οποίου έφερε στο φως το ανάκτορο στην κορυφή της ακρόπολης, καθώς και πλήθος θαλαμοειδών τάφων στην ευρύτερη περιοχή. Το έργο του Σλήμαν και του Χρήστου Τσούντα συνέχισε επάξια ο Άλαν Γουέις (A. Lion Gate
The Lion Gate was the main entrance of the Bronze Age citadel of Mycenae, southern Greece. It was erected during the 13th century BC in the northwest side of the acropolis and is named after the relief sculpture of two lionesses in a heraldic pose that stands above the entrance. The Lion Gate is the sole surviving monumental piece of Mycenaean sculpture, as well as the largest sculpture in the prehistoric Aegean.
Entrance
The greater part of the cyclopean wall in Mycenae, including the Lion Gate itself, was built during the second extension of the citadel which occurred in the Late Helladic period IIIB (13th century BC). At that time, the extended fortifications also included Grave Circle A, the burial place of the 16th-century BC royal families inside the city wall. This grave circle was found east of the Lion Gate, where a peribolos wall was also built. After the expansion, Mycenae could be entered by two gates, a main entrance and a postern, while the most extensive feature was undoubtedly the remodeling of the main entrance to the citadel, known as the Lion Gate, in the northwestern side built circa 1250 BC.

Mycenae is an archaeological site in Greece, located about 90 kilometres (56 miles) southwest of Athens, in the north-eastern Peloponnese. Argos is 11 kilometres (7 miles) to the south; Corinth, 48 kilometres (30 miles) to the north. From the hill on which the palace was located, one can see across the Argolid to the Saronic Gulf.
In the second millennium BC, Mycenae was one of the major centres of Greek civilisation, a military stronghold which dominated much of southern Greece. The period of Greek history from about 1600 BC to about 1100 BC is called Mycenaean in reference to Mycenae. At its peak in 1350 BC, the citadel and lower town had a population of 30,000 and an area of 32 hectares.
Although the citadel was built by Greeks, the name Mukanai is thought not to be Greek but rather one of the many pre-Greek place names inherited by the immigrant Greeks.
Legend has it that the name was connected to the Greek word mycēs (μύκης, "mushroom"). Thus, Pausanias ascribes the name to the legendary founder Perseus, who was said to have named it either after the cap of the sheath of his sword, or after a mushroom he had plucked on the site.

Το έργο του Σλήμαν συνέχισε από το 1888 ο Χρήστος Τσούντας, η συστηματική, σχεδόν επί εικοσαετία, σκαπάνη του οποίου έφερε στο φως το ανάκτορο στην κορυφή της ακρόπολης, καθώς και πλήθος θαλαμοειδών τάφων στην ευρύτερη περιοχή.
