Giants take down Cats for first time
The Giants have scored their first win over Geelong at a sold-out Manuka Oval.
The former Geelong premiership hero had the last laugh over his old team-mates as the Giants withstood a torrid fightback from the Cats to record one of the club's biggest victories.
In an instant Canberra classic, the Giants defeated the Cats by 13 points - 13.11 89 to 11.10 76 - Â in front of a sold-out crowd of 13,656 at Manuka Oval on Sunday.
The Giants led by as much as 37 points midway through the third quarter before the Cats kicked five straight goals to get back in the contest.
Giants midfielder Ryan Griffen had 31 touches while also restricting Cats star Patrick Dangerfield to 22 and just 10 touches after the first quarter.
Toby Greene (34 disposals) and Tom Scully (32) also found plenty of the footy for the Giants, while Cats forward Tom Hawkins was dominant with 10 marks, 18 disposals and three goals.
Johnson rebounded from a disappointing debut against Melbourne last week to kick two goals and have 23 disposals.
After playing 253 games and winning plenty of silverware with the Cats, he admitted it was a strange feeling running on to the ground.
"In the lead-up to the game, I was feeling a little bit strange," Johnson said.
"I'm really comfortable I'm a GWS Giants player, but then the Geelong team song comes on and you get some mixed feelings.
"It probably took me a quarter to work into the game. There's no excuse behind that. Once you get out to the field, cop a couple hits, get a couple kicks, it's just another game of footy."
Johnson was in the middle of the Giants' huddle in the change-rooms, knowing we had the team song down pat.
"We had a camp in about my third week at the club and as punishment we had to sing it repeatively and I learnt it straight up," Johnson said.
"Now my four-year-old boy sings it around the house."
Along with getting his hands on the footy, Johnson didn't shy away from the tough stuff.
He put a hit on former teammate Josh Caddy, who returned the favour.
"I didn't think much of it, I thought he thought it was personal," Johnson said.
"'He came down the ground to knock me over when we were having a shot on goal.
"All I said to him was, when Mummy was able to put the big hit on Mitch Duncan, I said, 'that's how you hit someone'.
"After the game, I was quite concerned about Mitch's health because that's one of the biggest hits I've seen on the footy field."
Mumford was at his imposing best delivering a physical contest around the ground.
His hard, but legal, hit on Duncan, which forced the Cats midfielder off the ground with concussion, was one of the biggest this season.
"Mummy's a physical presence for us and bit by bit, he's getting fitter and fitter," Giants coach Leon Cameron said.
"I reckon by around round three or four, he's going to be cherry ripe.
"He had some setbacks in the pre-season, but he's such a competitive animal and he leads the way."
Geelong controlled play in the opening quarter but couldn't convert where it counted, finishing with a return of 1.3 from six shots at goal.
Cats coach Chris Scott rued his side's inaccuracy.
"Momentum is a big part of footy, and when you have it, you have to make the most of it," Scott said.
"We really fluffed some pretty easy chances, but overall the game was going our way, we were happy the way the ground was looking and how it was set up.
"To play that poorly around the ball in the third quarter particularly was disappointing, but it wasn't just the third quarter.
"Our clearances, after last week, were just poor.
"We're very confident we can rectify that after this week."
