A mob sexual assault on young female revellers on New Year's Eve turned Germany's celebrated tolerance of mass migration upside down. What happened and why was it hushed up? How has it changed the nation?
Michelle describes how the assailants, supposedly refugees, "touched us everywhere they could, between the legs and at our breasts". Police and media initially downplayed the incident, but as days went by, Germans learned that more than 1000 complaints of sexual assault and theft had been lodged, with the alleged assailants being described as North African and Middle Eastern. Subsequently, the generosity that has seen Germany embrace more than a million new migrants in the past year, otherwise known as "Welcome Culture", is wearing thin. For Frauke Petry, head of the increasingly popular right wing Alternative Party for Germany, "it's time to wake up" to the way society is being changed by immigration. Left-wing feminist Alice Schwarzer fears that a "misguided tolerance" on race issues facilitated the violence, and the resultant backlash. "I am convinced", says Schwarzer, "that we have for the first time since 1945, a growing right wing movement."

Desperate to escape conflict and poverty, thousands of migrants and refugees attempt the perilous journey to Europe each year, with many crossing the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa in rubber dinghies and wooden boats.
In the wake of the decommissioning of Mare Nostrum, a search and rescue operation run by Italy, the humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), launched their own vessel, named the Bourbon Argos, to find those stranded at sea and save those in trouble on one of the deadliest routes to Europe.
On board the vessel, refugees and migrants are provided with medical aid, food, and shelter, then brought safely to Italian shores. Having survived life in Libya, ruthless treatment by smugglers, and horrific conditions aboard flimsy boats, once aboard the Bourbon Argos they face yet more uncertainty as they approach Europe.
VICE News teamed up with MSF to document these search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean and speak to rescued refugees and migrants, hearing about the suffering they have endured in their attempts to reach a new life.

This is a series of Interviews conducted among migrants in Berlin who lived in worked in Germany for decades. What might be surprising to many liberals is that they completely disapprove of the millions of illegal immigrants streaming into the country under the guise of being a "refugee". They complain that the new wave of illegal immigrants competes with not only Germans, but also established immigrants for housing and jobs.
The woman in the first interview says it's become a "catastrophe" and that she wants all refugees deported immediately as not a single one belongs to Germany. She asks why anybody would give them welfare, apartments and benefits for free and says she's now a voter for the far-right NPD (Nationalist Party).
A family father who lived in worked in Germany for 40 years says the new immigrants that came in the last 2-3 years caused "so much sh*t" in Germany and if he were mayor of Berlin, he'd deport them even for the most minor of offences. He also says why you're not allowed to talk about this because of a "free country" and "democratic" values. "What does that even mean?" he asks.
A merchant who has been selling goods at a market for 20 years says he no longer gets any customers as Germans have fled the inner cities as they are now filled only with foreigners and refugees, who, according to him, are not the "good people" he used to do business with.
Another woman says that there needs to be a different solution for migrants since you can't just give them free apartments and let them take away jobs from Germans and regular immigrants.
Multiple others complain about the skyrocketing rental prices and lack of housing for working class citizens due to the government housing refugees there.

A confrontation between 80 locals and 20 refugees in the German town of Bautzen, Saxony, escalated on the night of to the 14th. Patriotic German residents, labelled "far right extremists" by the German media, had enough of the sexual harassment, robberies and trouble caused by the male, mostly North African migrants and assembled in an effort to scare them off so the locals could go about their business in peace. They shouted slogans to make clear that the town belongs to them and that "they are the people".
Physical violence was initiated by the migrants. They threw bottles and wooden panels at the locals and attacked both the police, the right wing group as well as Leftists who previously allied with the refugees. The Germans managed to overpower them and chased them back to their asylum center.
German media currently portrays the events as Neo-Nazi Skinheads attacking innocent "unaccompanied refugee children" out of hatred and xenophobia.
Like with many other German cities, migrant gangs have claimed entire districts of the town for themselves, with many residents being too scared to enter these areas - especially after sunset. As the number of illegal immigrants on German soil increases, so do incidents of rape, sexual harassment and theft. This is the logical reaction of the native population who is fed up with this.

“There is no proper housing, no good life,” a Syrian refugee named Farouk told VICE News correspondent Milène Larsson in Berlin. “There is no good food, no work. Some people have to wait for a year to start learning German. People say it’s our fault, no.”
When the migrant crisis began to overwhelm Europe last year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stood out for her insistence on opening the country to newcomers. More than a million refugees moved in, and now Merkel’s popularity is waning.
“Our rooms are very cramped,” Farouk said. “No money, nothing that we can build a life with. There is nothing that gives us hope for tomorrow.”

Refugee
A refugee, according to the Geneva Convention on Refugees is a person who is outside their country of citizenship because they have well-founded grounds for fear of persecution because of their race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, and is unable to obtain sanctuary from their home country or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail themselves of the protection of that country; or in the case of not having a nationality and being outside their country of former habitual residence as a result of such event, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to their country of former habitual residence. Such a person may be called an "asylum seeker" until considered with the status of "refugee" by the Contracting State where they formally make a claim for sanctuary or right of asylum.
In UN parlance, the definition of the word has been expanded to include descendants of refugees, in the case of two specific groups: Palestinian refugees and Sahrawi refugees. Currently, the UN does not consider refugee status to be hereditary for any other groups.

80 Germans clash with 20 Refugees in Retaliation for Harassment of Locals in Bautzen, Saxony
A confrontation between 80 locals and 20 refugees in the German town of Bautzen, Saxony, escalated on the night of to the 14th. Patriotic German residents, labelled "far right extremists" by the German media, had enough of the sexual harassment, robberies and trouble caused by the male, mostly North African migrants and assembled in an effort to scare them off so the locals could go about their business in peace. Michelle describes how the assailants, supposedly refugees, "touched us everywhere they could, between the legs and at our breasts". Police and media initially downplayed the incident, but as days went by, Germans learned that more than 1000 complaints of sexual assault and theft had been lodged, with the alleged assailants being described as North African and Middle Eastern. Subsequently, the generosity that has seen Germany embrace more than a million new migrants in the past year, otherwise known as "Welcome Culture", is wearing thin. For Frauke Petry, head of the increasingly popular right wing Alternative Party for Germany, "it's time to wake up" to the way society is being changed by immigration. Left-wing feminist Alice Schwarzer fears that a "misguided tolerance" on race issues facilitated the violence, and the resultant backlash. "I am convinced", says Schwarzer, "that we have for the first time since 1945, a growing right wing movement."

VICE News teamed up with MSF to document these search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean and speak to rescued refugees and migrants, hearing about the suffering they have endured in their attempts to reach a new life.

Desperate to escape conflict and poverty, thousands of migrants and refugees attempt the perilous journey to Europe each year, with many crossing the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa in rubber dinghies and wooden boats.
In the wake of the decommissioning of Mare Nostrum, a search and rescue operation run by Italy, the humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), launched their own vessel, named the Bourbon Argos, to find those stranded at sea and save those in trouble on one of the deadliest routes to Europe.
On board the vessel, refugees and migrants are provided with medical aid, food, and shelter, then brought safely to Italian shores. Having survived life in Libya, ruthless treatment by smugglers, and horrific conditions aboard flimsy boats, once aboard the Bourbon Argos they face yet more uncertainty as they approach Europe.
VICE News teamed up with MSF to document these search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean and speak to rescued refugees and migrants, hearing about the suffering they have endured in their attempts to reach a new life.

This is a series of Interviews conducted among migrants in Berlin who lived in worked in Germany for decades. What might be surprising to many liberals is that they completely disapprove of the millions of illegal immigrants streaming into the country under the guise of being a "refugee". They complain that the new wave of illegal immigrants competes with not only Germans, but also established immigrants for housing and jobs.
The woman in the first interview says it's become a "catastrophe" and that she wants all refugees deported immediately as not a single one belongs to Germany. She asks why anybody would give them welfare, apartments and benefits for free and says she's now a voter for the far-right NPD (Nationalist Party).
A family father who lived in worked in Germany for 40 years says the new immigrants that came in the last 2-3 years caused "so much sh*t" in Germany and if he were mayor of Berlin, he'd deport them even for the most minor of offences. He also says why you're not allowed to talk about this because of a "free country" and "democratic" values. "What does that even mean?" he asks.
A merchant who has been selling goods at a market for 20 years says he no longer gets any customers as Germans have fled the inner cities as they are now filled only with foreigners and refugees, who, according to him, are not the "good people" he used to do business with.
Another woman says that there needs to be a different solution for migrants since you can't just give them free apartments and let them take away jobs from Germans and regular immigrants.
Multiple others complain about the skyrocketing rental prices and lack of housing for working class citizens due to the government housing refugees there.

A confrontation between 80 locals and 20 refugees in the German town of Bautzen, Saxony, escalated on the night of to the 14th. Patriotic German residents, labelled "far right extremists" by the German media, had enough of the sexual harassment, robberies and trouble caused by the male, mostly North African migrants and assembled in an effort to scare them off so the locals could go about their business in peace. They shouted slogans to make clear that the town belongs to them and that "they are the people".
Physical violence was initiated by the migrants. They threw bottles and wooden panels at the locals and attacked both the police, the right wing group as well as Leftists who previously allied with the refugees. The Germans managed to overpower them and chased them back to their asylum center.
German media currently portrays the events as Neo-Nazi Skinheads attacking innocent "unaccompanied refugee children" out of hatred and xenophobia.
Like with many other German cities, migrant gangs have claimed entire districts of the town for themselves, with many residents being too scared to enter these areas - especially after sunset. As the number of illegal immigrants on German soil increases, so do incidents of rape, sexual harassment and theft. This is the logical reaction of the native population who is fed up with this.

“There is no proper housing, no good life,” a Syrian refugee named Farouk told VICE News correspondent Milène Larsson in Berlin. “There is no good food, no work. Some people have to wait for a year to start learning German. People say it’s our fault, no.”
When the migrant crisis began to overwhelm Europe last year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stood out for her insistence on opening the country to newcomers. More than a million refugees moved in, and now Merkel’s popularity is waning.
“Our rooms are very cramped,” Farouk said. “No money, nothing that we can build a life with. There is nothing that gives us hope for tomorrow.”
