What is ABC NewsRadio?
ABC NewsRadio is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's national radio network providing continuous news and information 24 hours a day. It can be heard in an increasing number of locations around the country, plus you can listen online via this website.
When was ABC NewsRadio established?
ABC NewsRadio began broadcasting in August 1994.
Does ABC NewsRadio differ from the ABC's radio news service?
Yes. ABC NewsRadio is a distinct radio station, which draws from all the ABC's newsgathering resources and reporters. It is an independent ABC radio network.
How does ABC NewsRadio differ from local ABC stations and/or Radio National?
ABC NewsRadio is a separate station altogether. The ABC has a number of radio stations; ABC Local Radio, ABC Radio National, ABC Classic FM, triple j, triple j Unearthed, ABC Dig Music, ABC Jazz, ABC Country, Radio Australia and ABC NewsRadio.
Why does ABC NewsRadio broadcast Federal Parliament?
The network was established to broadcast Parliament. The ABC is legally obliged to broadcast proceedings of the Parliament at times determined by a parliamentary committee. Coverage of either the House of Representatives or the Senate takes priority over ABC NewsRadio's regular schedule. However, when Parliament is in session, ABC NewsRadio continues to broadcast its regular news program on the internet and via digital radio transmitters (DAB+) in the five state mainland capitals.
How can I listen to regular ABC NewsRadio programming while Federal Parliament is being broadcast?
You can continue to listen to regular programming while Federal Parliament is broadcast on our analogue service (AM/FM) by tuning in to ABC NewsRadio on Digital Radio in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney; online at abc.net.au/newsradio; or via the ABC Radio mobile app.
Why does ABC NewsRadio have football coverage on the weekends in winter?
An agreement between the AFL and the ABC means ABC NewsRadio provides coverage of some matches in some states. In all other states, ABC NewsRadio broadcasts its regular programming.
Does ABC NewsRadio publish a printed program guide?
No, but you can access our schedule at the Programs page. Because ABC NewsRadio is a "rolling news" station, its program is subject to change due to coverage of breaking news as well as its obligation to broadcast Parliament when in session.
Are ABC NewsRadio's broadcast delayed in any timezones?
No, ABC NewsRadio is broadcast live throughout Australia, in real time, so everyone hears the news as it happens. This is another reason why we don't have a traditional schedule, but a constant 'rolling' service.

Why doesn't ABC NewsRadio have more transmitters, especially in regional areas?
Since 2007 ABC NewsRadio has expanded the number of frequencies from 13 to scores around the nation. Once complete, the new frequency rollout will give 95% of Australians the chance to hear ABC NewsRadio. The Federal Government pledged additional funding for the expansion of ABC NewsRadio into to all centres with populations of more than 10,000, subject to the availability of spectrum.
