Brisbane Lions player Archie Smith steps on stingray

Graphic image warning

Brisbane Lions player Archie Smith ended up in hospital for New Year's Eve, after stepping on a stingray.

The 21-year-old AFL player had been at Nobby's Beach on the Gold Coast when he stepped on the marine creature, with its barb piercing his right foot.

He was taken to hospital by paramedics, where the barb was removed and the wound stitched up.

At least the ruckman, who debuted for the Lions last season, could see the funny side, tweeting an image of his foot captioned "safe to say the stingray won this round".

Staying positive, Smith said the recovery would be "hopefully only a couple of weeks".

Smith chose AFL over a professional basketball career at the age of 17, and played three games for the Lions in 2016.
